READING, Pa. – Three pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout for the Arcadia University baseball team as it recorded a 6-0 Commonwealth Conference victory at Albright College Thursday as the two teams opened a three-game series.
Senior
Jason Goldberg scattered three hits while fanning five batters over his seven innings of work to improve his record to 3-0 on the season. Classmate
Jonah Van Bemmelen fanned two of the four batters he faced in the eighth, while sophomore
Christopher Keesser struck out one of his three opposing batters in the ninth to seal the win.
The Knights (9-5, 6-2 CC) got all the offense they would need in the top of the first when junior
Nick Todero doubled down the left field line to plate senior
Andonis Yiantsos. Todero later drove in senior
Tom Wagner with a single to right-center field in the top of the seventh as he finished the day 2 for 5 with a double and two RBI, making the score 5-0.
Arcadia pulled away with three runs in the top of the fourth as sophomore
Justin Chasmar scored on an error before classmate
Jordan Draude tore the cover off the ball with his two-run bomb to left, and senior
Justin Simpson put an exclamation point on the win with his solo blast to left in the top of the eight.
Draude was 3 for 4 on the day with a double, a homerun, two RBI and a run scored, while Simpson was 2 for 4 with a two runs scored and another driven in.
The Lions (6-6-1, 4-4 CC) put runners on first and second with two away in the bottom of the first and second innings, but Goldberg got senior Zac Okonski role one back to mound to end the threat in the first and struck out sophomore Nathan Fretz to get out of the jam in the second. An error and a walk put runners on first and second with two gone in the fourth before junior Brandon Triantos lined out to right to end the inning.
Senior Alex Myers took the loss on the hill for Albright, dropping his record to 1-2 after giving up five runs (four earned) on eight hits with five strikeouts over seven innings.
These two teams will meet again Saturday when Arcadia hosts a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader at Erny Field. Game-one is scheduled to get under way at 1 p.m.
