Softball Splits Doubleheader With Stockton

GLENSIDE, Pa. - The Arcadia University softball team split a non-conference doubleheader at Blankley Field with visiting Stockton University Thursday, losing game one 2-0 and winning game two 10-5.

Game one saw some tough pitching and great defensive action, keeping everything all tied up till the 4th inning.  With two runners on base, Stockton sophomore Holly Arentowicz hit a single though the left side to score the only runs in the game. That was all the run support junior Samantha Shockley needed as she scattered nine hits while picking up the shutout victory for the Ospreys (17-16).

Arcadia's bats struggled early before generating a number of scoring chances in the later innings, but could not take advantage, leaving runners on first and second in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Junior Erin Wilson picked up the loss for the Knights despite a strong performance in the circle for the Knights (15-21), allowing two runs on five hits with three strikeouts.

The temperature dropped as the wind picked up for game-two, but that didn't stop the bats from heating up for both teams as they combined for 15 runs and 25 hits in the nightcap.

The Knights led 2-1 after the first inning as junior Nikki Larro hit a double down the left side line scoring senior Jessica Shotwell before heading home as junior Alicia McMahon sliced a single down the line in right. That lead didn't last long though as junior Nicole Tomo and Shockey delivered run scoring singles in the top of the second, giving the Ospreys a 3-2 lead.

That advantage lasted until Arcadia pushed three runs across the plate in the bottom of the fourth to regain the lead for good. Shotwell drove in sophomore Laura Christine and Kaylee Zarick with a double to center to put the Knights back on top, and freshman Tori Zaccaria came home on junior Sara Boyadjis' sacrifice fly to center to cap the scoring in the inning.

Stockton got one run back the following inning after junior Dominque Dorris' launched a solo shot over the left field fence, but that was as close as the Ospreys would get the rest of the way. Arcadia put up five more runs in the bottom of the sixth, with McMahon putting an exclamation point on the outburst after driving in freshman Amanda Hess and junior Nicki Larro with a double to the gap in right center.

Stockton tried to piece together a rally in the top of the seventh, but managed just one unearned run before freshman Daniela Marinaro stranded runners on second and third with her ground out to shortstop to end the game.

Christine evened her record at 7-7 with the win after allowing five runs (three earned) on 12 hits. Shotwell was 3 for 3 in the game with a double, two RBI and a run scored, while Larro went 2 for 4 with a double, two runs scored and another driven in. McMahon was 2 for 4 with a double and a game-high three runs batted in.

Arcadia will close out the 2015 regular season Saturday when it hosts a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader against Alvernia University.
