GLENSIDE, Pa. – The fourth-seeded Arcadia University women's lacrosse team closed the game with four unanswered goals to record a 13-8 victory over fifth-seeded Albright College in the opening round of the 2015 Commonwealth Conference Championship Tournament Monday night at Easton Field.
The Knights improved to 12-6 with the win, and will next travel to top-seeded and 16th-ranked Messiah College for a Commonwealth Conference semifinal match Thursday at 4 p.m.
Senior
Haylee Molloy scored one goal and assisted on two others, and in doing so became the first 300-point scorer in program history. She reached the milestone with her program-record 232rd career goal, which capped the scoring in the contest with three minutes to go in the game off a feed from junior
Adeline Bellesheim.
Freshman
Nicole Hutson scored a game-high four goals for the Knights, while Bellesheim and junior
Jessica Santoli added three goals each. Junior
Jordyn Dunacusky totaled seven saves in goal, improving her record to 11-5 for the season.
Albright opened the game with a three-goal run over the opening 14 minutes of the game, which included a pair of unassisted goals from Amanda Smith and one tally from Jacqui Montague. Arcadia dominated the remainder of the opening frame, scoring seven straight to take a 7-3 lead at the half. Hutson scored each of the Knights first two goals to get things going for the Knights, and Santoli capped the run with just seven second left on the clock.
The Lions scored four of the first five goals to open the second half, pulling within one on Montague's third goal of the game that cut Arcadia's lead to 8-7 in the middle stages of the frame. Santoli scored what proved to be the game-winner with 15 minutes to go off a pass from Molly, but Meghan Wilson countered with a free position goal with 8:33 left to make it 9-8.
Bellesheim started the run that allowed Arcadia to pull away for the win with a free position goal of her own two minutes later, which was quickly followed by goals from junior
Dawn Faranetta and Hutson in over the next 48 seconds to swing the momentum back in Arcadia's favor.
Albright managed just one shot in the final six minutes, which was saved by junior
Jordyn Dunacusky with just under five minutes to go for her seventh stop of the game. Hutson got the draw control following Molloy's tally, allowing the Knights to run out the remaining three minutes to secure their first postseason win as a member of the Commonwealth Conference.
Montague and Smith scored three goals each for the Lions, while Wilson had two goals with two assists. Emily Hutson, who is the older sister of Arcadia's
Nicole Hutson, failed to make even one save as she took the loss in net for Albright.
