Men’s Basketball Battles to 75-71 Overtime Win Over Rutgers-Newark

GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Arcadia University men's basketball team extended its winning streak to five Monday night following a 75-71 overtime win over the Scarlet Raiders of Rutgers-Newark. Senior John Landro led the way for the Knights with 22 points with Josh Scott (17) and Ryan Kelley (10) supporting with double-figures. Jordan McDaniel dropped a game-high 23 points for the Scarlet Raptors on 10 of 19 shooting. The Knights move to 10-2 on the season, while Rutgers-Newark falls to 8-4.
 
Neither team gained complete control as each squad's largest lead was five. The teams alternated the first five baskets over the opening three minutes before Alex Cohen was able to give Arcadia an 8-5 lead when he laid in his first two points off an assist from Scott following a Kelley jumper. After Scott buried a three to put Arcadia ahead 13-9 with 10:54 to go, the Scarlet Raiders used a quick 7-0 spurt capped by a Ricky Stephens three with 9:08 to go in the opening half to recapture the lead at 16-13.
 
Landro put an end to the Scarlet Raider run with a jumper at the 8:40 mark before a Brandon Thompson trey vaulted Arcadia back to an 18-16 advantage. Following a quick exchange of buckets, the visitors pushed back scoring the next six points keyed by a McDaniel layup and pair of free throws for a 24-20 lead with 5:51 to go until the break. The Scarlet and Grey responded with a 7-2 run sparked by a Landro three and capped with a Scott jumper for a 27-26 lead with just over three minutes to go until the half. The Scarlet Raiders ended the half on a Vik Singh three to take a 33-30 lead to the break.
 
A 40.7% shooting performance from the Knights in the opening stanza was led by nine points from Landro, while Scott and Kelley each contributed a half dozen. The Scarlet Raiders were led by McDaniel and Stephens with 10 piints on 4 of 7 and 4 of 4 shooting, respectively as the team shot 50% in the half.
 
After John Snow hit the a pair of free throws to open the second half, Kelley sandwiched a Landro three with a pair of buckets to give Arcadia the lead once again at 35-32 just over three minutes in. Scott completed a three point play to push the lead to 43-39 before the Scarlet Raiders tallied the next six points to reclaim a 45-43 lead with 12:09 left in regulation.
 
Using an 8-2 run, Arcadia opened a 58-53 lead following a pair of Keith Bacote free throws; Scott hit a pair of layups earlier in the run to give the Knights the lead back. The Scarlet Raptors took the lead one last time following a 7-0 spurt capped by a Stephens layup with 1:12 to go, however Cohen converted a pair of free throws with 56 ticks left in regulation to send the game to an extra session.
 
Arcadia scored the first four points of the overtime period, before gaining a 70-65 advantage on a Landro layup with 3:33 left in the frame. Converting 7 of 9 free throw attempts in the extra session, the Knights were able to seal the victory courtesy of a Cohen pair with three seconds left.
 
The Knights shot 39.1% from the field in the game. Evan Slone led all players with 10 rebounds.
 
Rutgers-Newark was led by McDaniel's 23 points as they shot 44.3% from the field as a team.
 
The Knights return to action on Wednesday as they host DeSales in the final non-conference contest of the season.
