GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Arcadia University women's basketball team was outscored 45-22 in the second half by visiting DeSales University as it dropped a 65-50 non-conference decision Wednesday night at Alumni Gymnasium. The Bulldogs improved to 8-4 with the win, while the Knights fell to 7-5 with the loss.
The Knights came out strong in the first quarter outscoring the visitors 13-5 as they ended the frame on a 9-0 run that involved four different scorers.
Addy Crenny and
Sammy Downham each hit jumpers while
Valerie DiMuro and Dominque Hassinger each laid in two points, with Hassinger's closing the quarter with 35 ticks to go.
Each team tallied 15 in the second quarter; DeSales scored most of its points on an 8-0 run that covered the middle portion of the period after
Imani Alston put Arcadia up 10 with a layup just under three minutes in. Jen Napolitano opened the Bulldog run with a three, before a Katie Miller free throw brought the Knight lead to just two with 3:38 left in the half. Arcadia scored the next five points as Crenny converted a jumper before Hassinger deposited a three to push the lead back to seven at 24-17 with 2:49 to go until the break. A layup from
Camille Menns with 18 ticks left sent the Scarlet and Grey to the half with a 28-20 advantage.
The Knights shot 37.1% in the half led by Downham's 2 of 3 performance for five points. Hassinger recorded a team-high seven points on 3 of 5 shooting. As one of the top defenses in the MAC Commonwealth, the Knights held DeSales to 18.8% in the opening 20 minutes. DeSales was led by Napolitano and Morgan McCollian with six points each.
The second half would be a much different story as DeSales shot 46.9% over the final 20 minutes while holding Arcadia to just 29.4% from the field. The Bulldogs took the lead on a McCollian layup with 7:07 left in the fourth quarter to open a 9-0 run and would not look back.
Downham finished the game with nine points to lead the Knights while McCollian posted a game-best 18 for DeSales to go along with her game-high 12 rebounds.
The Knights return to conference play on Saturday when they travel to Stevenson for a 1 p.m. contest.
