WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Arcadia University men's basketball team finished the CUA-Holiday Inn College Park Classic Friday night with an 88-77 win over Dickinson at Catholic University. The Knights improved to 6-5 on the season, while the Red Devils fell to 6-4.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The game's first six minutes were a back-and-forth affair as neither team was able to lead by more than three. Jason Rivera capped the run with a jumper to extend the lead to 20-13 just over seven minutes in. A pair of free throws from Elijah Wright with 5:20 to go until the half brought the Red Devils within a single point at 32-31, however they regain their lead. Six points from sophomore
Kyle Reilly fueled a half-ending 13-8 spurt to put Arcadia in front 45-49 at the break.
The second half started much like the first as neither team was able to take control over the first seven minutes. With a 60-55 lead, five different players scored as part of an 11-0 run that led to Arcadia opening a game-high 16 point lead at 71-55 with 9:12 to go. Dickinson managed to climb back to within as many as six on the heels of a 10-point spurt, highlighted by seven points from Wright, but the Knights' defense stood strong down the stretch while the offense scored 11 of the game's final 17 points.
ARCADIA LEADERS: Kelley led the way for Arcadia with 25 points on 8-17 shooting from the field and 8-9 shooting from the charity stripe. Sophomore
Evan Slone added 14 points on 7-10 shooting, while classmate
Phil Pierfy contributed 12 points off the bench. Reilly reached double-figures with 10 points. Sophomore
Josh Scott led the way off the glass with a game-best tying seven rebounds.
DICKINSON LEADERS: Wright led all scorers with 28 points on 7-10 shooting and 13-17 from the free throw line. Justus Melton added 19 on 6-10 shooting, while Jule Brown reached double figures with 10 points. Melton and Mike Hinckley tied Scott's seven rebounds.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: The Knights shot 49.2% (32-65) from the floor, including 4-13 (30.8%) from distance, while converting 20-27 (74.1%) from the charity stripe. The Red Devils went 24-55 (43.6%) from the field, including 6-24 (25%%) from beyond the arc, while converting 23-35 (65.7%) from the free throw line. Turnovers played a huge role for Arcadia, as the Knights scored 33 points off 23 Dickinson turnovers. The Knights controlled the paint by outscoring the opposition 44-30 down low, while Arcadia's bench outscored the Red Devils' 26-12.
