Women’s Basketball Takes Messiah to Double Overtime, Fall 74-70

GRANTHAM, Pa. – The Arcadia University women's basketball team travelled to Messiah College for the season finale Saturday afternoon, falling 74-70 to the Falcons in double overtime. Senior forward Valerie DiMuro had a big game for the Scarlet and Grey as she posted a team-high 18 points. Those 18 points gave DiMuro exactly 1,000 for her career, the third player in program history to reach the century mark.  The Knights finish the season 10-15 overall with a 5-11 conference record, while Messiah heads to postseason play at 18-7 overall and 12-4 in conference play.

The Scarlet and Grey used another valiant effort in the fourth quarter to force the first overtime. Entering the final regulation frame trailing by eight, Hassinger, DiMuro and classmate Addy Crenny led the Knights in scoring the first 11 points of the frame. Before the seniors took over the period, freshman Camille Menns hit a jumper to open the frame. DiMuro's 1,000th point came on the second of two free throw attempts with 49 ticks left in regulation to give the Scarlet and Grey a 57-53 lead.

The Falcons went on to convert four free throws to tie the game at 57 with 11 seconds remaining in regulation. Coming out of a timeout, Arcadia had two attempts at a game-winning shot but could not convert as Hassinger missed a three before Crenny was blocked on the ensuing layup with one second left.

Each team netted eight points in the first overtime. Messiah's Dominique Seamon converted the first field goal of the stanza with a layup to give the Falcons a 61-59 lead with just over two minutes to go. Efficient free throw shooting elevated the Falcon lead to six with 1:33 to go. Back came the Knights as Hassinger scored the next four points by converting a pair of free throws and laying in two points on a layup with 51 ticks to go to bring the Knights within a pair at 65-63. Freshman Olivia Roseman forced a turnover with a steal with seven seconds to go before feeding junior Imani Alston for the game-tying layup with three seconds left in the first overtime.

With the foul count adding up, the Falcons used sharp shooting from the charity stripe to pull away in the second overtime period. Seamon opened the frame with a jumper before the Knights regained a one point lead courtesy of a pair of Hassinger free throws. Gillian Glackin converted two of her 15 free throws to give Messiah the lead for good with 46 seconds left. Alston had Arcadia within one following a layup with 13 ticks remaining, however the hosts would deposit three more free throws to claim the win.

The Scarlet and Grey were effective from the field shooting 46.3% on the afternoon. DiMuro's 18 points came on 7 of 10 shooting. Hassinger moved into ninth on the all-time scoring list following her 17 point outing, she finishes her career with 732 career point;, with a 7 of 10 showing from the free throw line she is tied for third in free throws made all-time with 202. Crenny deposited eight points to move into a tie for seventh on the all-time scoring list with 794 total points. She pulled in a team-best tying seven boards to finish her career with the best rebounding average in program history with 10.7 per game.
