Softball Splits Day, Defeats Muhlenberg 6-4 and Fall to Wesleyan 6-0

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Arcadia University softball team went 1-1 on the day as it defeated Muhlenberg 6-4 to open the afternoon, before falling 6-0 to Wesleyan in the night cap. Sophomore Amanda Hess led the Knights' offense with a 3 for 7 day at the plate, including a triple and a double, with a pair of RBI. Arcadia sits at 5-1 through three days of competition in Clermont.

Arcadia 6, Muhlenberg 4

The Scarlet and Grey wasted no time getting on the board as senior Sara Boyadjis led the game off with a walk, before moving to second on an error by the second baseman that allowed senior Sarah Gunia to reach first. During the next at-bat, Boyadjis stole third before scoring on a throwing error by the catcher. The Mules responded in the bottom half of the inning when Nicole Iannarone was awarded home on a balk.

The second inning opened with a Nicki Larro walk; the senior moved to second two batters later when classmate Erin Wilson grounded out in a fielder's choice. The next batter, sophomore Tori Zaccaria, singled allowing Larro to come cross the dish.

Muhlenberg got the run back in the bottom of the frame when Amie DeFeo singled to right to score Kristina Qualben; Karissa Astrella was thrown out at third on the play to end the inning.

The third went scoreless before the teams traded runs again in the fourth. Sophomore Nicole Iasiello sent a one-out single to the shortstop before moving to thirds two batters later when Zaccaria forced the pitcher into an error. Sophomore Kaylee Zarick brought Iasiello home with a single up the middle one batter later. Muhlenberg retaliated on a two-out RBI single to center from DeFeo.

The fifth followed the same pattern as each team plated another run. After Larro drew a two-out walk, Iasiello smacked an RBI double to left center, before Qualben sent an RBI double of her own to left center in the bottom of the half of the inning.

The sixth inning proved to be the decisive one. Boyadjis served as the first base runner of the frame after drawing a two-out walk. The shortstop swiped second before Gunia walked to set up a two-on, two0out situation for Hess. The third baseman ripped a triple to the fence through the right side to drive in the winning-run.

Wilson picked up her third win of the season as she allowed four runs (two earned) on six hits, with six walks and three strikes outs in seven innings of work.

Wesleyan 6, Arcadia 0

Wesleyan tallied all six of its runs over the first three innings, including a four-run second highlighted by a two out, bases loaded double to center field by Reilly Weiners.

Gunia took the loss in the contest allowing six runs (5 earned) on 11 hits while walking one and striking out five in seven innings of work.

The Knights return to the diamond tomorrow to take on SUNY Potsdam at 9 a.m. and Bethany (WV) at 1 p.m. on the final day of spring break competition.
