Defensive Struggles Cost Baseball Team in 8-7 Loss to New Jersey City

CABO ROJO, Puerto Rico - The Arcadia University baseball team dropped an 8-7 decision to New Jersey City Friday at Parque de Pelota Tuto Mendoza in Puerto Rico, dropping its record to 7-4 for the season. NJCU improved to 5-2 with the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Arcadia committed five errors in the game that resulted in five unearned runs for NJCU. The Knights trailed 7-4 after Jeff Reinecke drove in a pair of runs with his double to the gap in right center field, but rallied to tie the game in the bottom half of the frame. Arcadia quickly loaded the bases in the inning, allowing senior Michael Nessel and junior Justin Chasmar to score on back-to-back balks charged to Anthony Zicaro before senior George Pagan lifted a sac fly that plated classmate Connor Arsenault with the game-tying run. Sophomore Connor Laigiae recorded two quick outs in the top of the eighth before a walk and an error extended the inning, which allowed Joe Coutinho to deliver a game-winning RBI-single to right that scored Dmitri Rueger from third.

ON THE HILL: Mike Ramirez picked up his first decision of the season after fanning three batters over the final 2.2 innings for NJCU. Laigiae took the loss for Arcadia, seeing his record drop to 1-2 after allowing one unearned run with two Ks over 2.1 innings of relief work.

ARCADIA AT-BAT: Senior Nick Todero was 3 for 5 with a double, one RBI and a run scored, while Chasmar finished the day 2 for 5 with two runs scored and another driven in. Sophomore Pat Shevlin was 1 for 2 with two RBI.

NEW JERSEY CITY AT-BAT: Rueger was 2 for 4 for five stolen bases and three runs scored, while Reinecke was 3 for 5 with a double and four RBI. Coutinho was 1 for 4 with two runs scored and two driven in.
