Softball Suffers Pair of Setbacks to Widener 6-0, 6-4

GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Arcadia University softball team dropped its conference opening doubleheader with Widener Wednesday evening 6-0 in game one and 6-4 in the second game. The Knights fall to 7-5 and 0-2 in conference play, while Widener moves to 9-3 and 4-2 in conference play.
 
Game 1: Widener 6, Arcadia 0
 
How it happened: Game one's first three innings proved to be a pitching duel with the only base runners being a leadoff walk and a runner reaching on a fielder's choice later in the top of the first inning by Widener. The Pride tallied all of its runs between the fourth and sixth innings, scoring three in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth.
 
Arcadia at the Plate: Freshman Jackie Bilotti recorded the Knights' only hit of the game on a two-out single up the middle.  
 
Widener at the Plate: The Pride had nine hits in the game led by Katie Sterling, who went 3-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Taylor Allen drove in two while going 2-3.
 
Arcadia in the Circle: Erin Wilson (4-2) got the start for Arcadia throwing five innings; she surrendered five runs on six hits with four walks and four strikeouts. Bilotti finished the game giving up one run on three hits with a strikeout.  
 
Widener in the Circle: Alexis Schengrund (6-1) tossed a one-hitter with no walks and eight strikeouts.
 
Game 2: Widener 6, Arcadia 4
 
How it Happened: Both offenses came alive in the nightcap. After hitting an RBI double down the left field line on a full count, sophomore Amanda Hess scored on a passed ball, giving the Scarlet and Grey a 2-1 lead after four innings. The Pride responded with three runs in the top of the fifth for a 5-2 lead, before the Knights pulled back to a 5-4 deficit in the bottom half of the frame; Widener added its last run in the top of the sixth.
 
Arcadia at the Plate: Senior Sarah Gunia led the Knights' eight hit effort, going 2-4 with an RBI and run scored. Hess (1-3) and Bilotti (0-3) each drove in a run, with Hess, Boyadjis and sophomore Marissa Mancinelli each scoring.
 
Widener at the Plate: Alie Alkins' 3-4, four RBI outing led the Pride, as the team recorded 10 hits. Lauren DelRomano was the only other Widener player with a multi-hit game, while she and Ally Horvath each scored twice.
 
Arcadia in the Circle: Freshman Kayla Resh got the start in the second game, allowing five runs (3 earned) on six hits with three walks and three strikeouts in four innings of work. Gunia allowing a single run on four hits with a strikeout over the final three innings.
 
Widener in the Circle: Alexis Schengrund started again in the second game, throwing two innings of no-hit ball, while walking one and striking out two. Devin Coyle threw 1.1 innings allowing two runs (1 earned) on four hits with a strikeout before Katie Rabuck finished the final 3.2 innings allowing two runs on four hits with a walk and three strikeouts.
 
Up Next: The Knights continue conference play on Saturday, when they host Messiah for a twin bill starting at noon.
