GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Arcadia University softball team came back from a late 2-0 deficit to record a 4-3 victory over Cabrini College Sunday at Blankley Field to win the 2016 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III South Championship. This marks the first-ever ECAC tournament win for the Knights, who finished the season with a 25-19 record.
ECAC MOP: Senior
Erin Wilson was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player after going 2-1 over 14 total innings in the three tournament games, allowing four earned runs on 16 hits with six strikeouts for the weekend.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Cavaliers scored both of their runs on one swing of bat, when Kaitlyn Cooper came to the plate with two outs in the bottom of the third inning and sent a 3-2 pitch over the left field fence for a two-run home run.
The 2-0 score held until the top of the sixth, where the Knights scored three times to take the lead for good. Freshman
Jackie Bilotti led off the inning with a four-pitch walk before stealing second and advanced to third following a groundout. Sophomore
Amanda Hess then sent a single up the middle to plate Arcadia's first run. Two-batters later, senior
Alicia McMahon singled in Hess from second to tie the game 2-2. With two outs in the frame, sophomore
Nicole Iasiello was standing on third as classmate
Tori Zaccaria stepped to the plate, and scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball. The Knights tacked on another run in the top of the seventh on a sac fly by senior
Sara Boyadjis that scored classmate
Sarah Gunia, giving Arcadia a 4-2 lead heading to the bottom of the frame.
Darian Caputo came to the plate with Brittany Smith on first and two outs, singled to the shortstop and advanced to second on an error allowed Smith to score, cutting Cabrini's deficit to 4-3. Wilson then got Christine Ferraro to pop out to left field to end the game and give the Knights the win.
KNIGHTS AT THE PLATE: Hess and McMahon each had two hits to lead Arcadia's seven-hit game. Boyadjis, Hess and McMahon all drove in a run. Bilotti, Hess, Iasiello and Gunia all scored for the Scarlet and Grey.
CAVALIERS AT THE PLATE: Ferraro, Marissa Alpaugh and Emily Shull each recorded two hits for Cabrini, with Cooper's home run being responsible for both Cavalier runs.
IN THE CIRCLE: Wilson (12-9) picked up the win allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits with no walks and three strikeouts. Jess Giordano (13-7) suffered the loss allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits with two walks and a strikeout.
