GLENSIDE, Pa. – Sophomore
Kyle Reilly drained a three from the corner with 11.3 seconds remaining to break a 79-79 tie and give the Arcadia University men's basketball team a thrilling 82-79 MAC Commonwealth victory over visiting Hood College Saturday at Alumni Gymnasium.
FOR THE RECORD: The Knights improved to 8-6 overall with their seventh win in their last nine games, and in the process improved to 3-2 in MAC Commonwealth play. The Blazers fell to 10-4 overall and 2-3 in conference action with third consecutive setback.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Arcadia appeared to be in complete control of the game after using a six-point surge to close the first half with a 45-35 lead and led by a game-high 15 after Reilly canned a jumper in the paint to put the Knights up 52-37 1:27 into the second half. The Blazers then went on a 20-5 run over the next seven minutes to tie the game at 57 with 11:19 to go. Michael Robinson capped the run by hitting a layup as he was fouled and converted the free throw that followed to complete the three-point play.
Junior
Brandon Thompson answered with a three on the ensuing possession to trigger a nine-point run that he closed out with a layup to give Arcadia a 66-57 lead with 8:37 left in the contest. The Scarlet and Grey led by eight after a Reilly free throw with four minutes to go, only to see Jared Ruiz drain a three that started a nine-point run that Scott Bolen capped with a pair of free throws that gave Hood a 75-74 lead with a minute and a half to go in the game.
The two teams traded baskets from there, with Reilly answering for the Knights each time, including the game-winning three with 11.3 seconds remaining in the contest. Bolen missed a three on the next trip down the floor for the Blazers, who had one last chance with 0.8 seconds on the clock after freshman
Will Derr missed a pair of free throws. Hood used a pair of timeouts to draw up the potential game-tying play, but couldn't get a shot off following the inbounding pass.
ARCADIA LEADERS: Sophomore
Josh Scott scored game-high 21 points on 7 of 13 shooting from the field to go with five rebounds and five assists, while Thompson finished with 14 points on 5 of 9 shooting from the field to go with four rebounds and three assists. Reilly finished with 16 points on 6 of 9 shooting from the floor, and scored each of Arcadia's final 10 points in the game after hitting four baskets in the final four minutes with a pair of threes.
HOOD LEADERS: Bolen and Trevor Magnuski led the Blazers with 18 points each. Magnuski was 7 of 10 from the field with three rebounds and three assists, while Bolen was 6 of 13 from the field with four boards, two assists and two steals. Daniel Wegener also scored in double figures with 12 points, going 3 for 4 from the field and 6 of 8 at the line while grabbing five rebounds.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Arcadia shot 53 percent (29-55) from the floor and 42 percent (10-24) from three, but shot just 61 percent (14-23) from the charity stripe. Hood shot just 42 percent (25-59) from the floor and 26 percent (5-19) from three, but stayed in the game thanks to a 24 of 31 performance at the line. The Blazers had a 40-28 advantage in points in the paint.
