Women’s Soccer Takes No. 8 Carnegie Mellon to Overtime in Second Round of NCAA Tournament

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Arcadia University women's soccer team dropped a heartbreaking 1-0, overtime defeat at the hands of No. 8 Carnegie Mellon in the Second Round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament Sunday night.
 
FOR THE RECORD:
  • The Knights finish the season at 16-6
  • The Tartans moved to 15-2-2
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Sophomore Veronica Garcia nearly got the Knights on the board in the 69th minute when she rang a shot off the post.
  • Senior Tara Smith gave the Scarlet and Grey another opportunity in the 80th minute, as she managed to get a shot off in the middle of a scrum in front of the goal; a Tartan defender knocked the ball away behind the keeper.
  • With less than a minute to go in regulation, the Knights were awarded a free kick on the left side of the box, but were unable to get a shot off.
  • Carnegie Mellon scored the game-winner in the 97th minute
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • The Knights put two of its six shots on goal and took two corner kicks
  • Freshman Brianna Williams made 12 saves
  • Five different players took a shot, led by Smith with two
NOTES:
  • The 2017 season provided multiple firsts for Arcadia, including its first-ever MAC Commonwealth Championship and first-ever NCAA tournament win.
