No. 2 Women’s Volleyball Edged by No. 1 Stevenson in MAC Commonwealth Championship Final

OWNINGS MILL, Md. – The second-seeded Arcadia University women's volleyball team battled top-seeded Stevenson in the MAC Commonwealth Championship Final Saturday afternoon, falling 3-1. The match marked the Knights' first-ever appearance in the conference title game since joining the MAC Commonwealth in 2008.
 
FOR THE RECORD:
  • The Knights now hold a 23-11 record on the year
  • The Mustangs, who are ranked 15th in Division III by the AVCA, hold a 32-1 record
SET SCORES:
  • 25-23, 21-25, 25-20, 25-20
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Scarlet and Grey clawed back from an early deficit to tie the first set on multiple occasions, including at 23-23 to force the hosts into a time out.
  • The second set appeared it would play out in similar fashion, until Arcadia ripped off seven straight points to go from down 16-14 to in front 21-16. Reigning MAC Commonwealth Co-Rookie of the Year Lauren Enfield tallied two aces in the spurt, while sophomore Shannon Ryan and junior Lizzie Joseph each registered two kills.
  • Neither team gained momentum to open the third set, until the Knights pieced together a four-point spurt to force the Mustangs into a timeout down 18-15.
  • Arcadia jumped out to a 6-2 lead to start the fourth set. Stevenson slowly chipped away at its deficit until it scored eight of the match's final nine points
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Joseph tied a match-high 16 kills, while adding three block assists and 20 digs.
  • Ryan totaled 12 kills
  • Freshman Julia Paliwodzinski led all players with 39 assists
  • Junior Katie Wilson totaled five block assists and one solo block
  • Sophomore Emily Eng recorded a match-high 26 digs
  • The Knights scored 62 points on 50 kills, four aces and eight blocks
  • Stevenson totaled 73 points on 61 kills, two aces and 10 blocks
NOTES:
  • Joseph moved into sole possession of third place on the single-season kills list with 280
  • Paliwodzinski's 618 assists this season are the fifth most in any season in program history
  • Eng registered a pair of aces to move into fourth place on the all-time single-season list with 63
STILL TO COME:
  • Arcadia now awaits a potential bid into the ECAC Division III Championship Tournament. Tournament selections will be announced Monday.
