PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – The Arcadia University men's volleyball team fell in five sets at St. Joseph's College Friday night in a battle of first-year programs Friday Night on Long Island.
FOR THE RECORD: The Golden Eagles improved to 5-2 with their second straight win, while the Knights dropped to 4-4 with the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Arcadia recorded a dominant 25-17 win in the fourth set to tie the match at 2-2, but was unable to complete the come-from-behind win. St. Joseph's never trailed in the deciding set, scoring each of the first three points and later using a 5-1 run to go up 12-7 on its way to a 15-10 victory.
The Knights closed the first set with three unanswered points for a 25-22 win and take an early 1-0 lead in the match, but the Golden Eagles answered by winning the next two games by scores of 25-18 and 25-20.
ARCADIA LEADERS: The Knights had three players score in double figures, led by freshman
Edwin Waters Jr.'s season-high 17 kills that were accompanied by seven digs and five blocks. Classmates
Bryce Galloway and
Jason Manley added 12 kills and three blocks each while totaling seven digs and five digs, respectively. Senior
Sean Cohen notched a match-high 44 assists with 11 digs in his return to the lineup from injury.
ST. JOSEPH'S LEADERS: Paul Curaro posted a double-double with a match-high 18 kills and 11 digs to lead the Golden Eagles. Kyle Biggers hit .467 with nine kills and two errors on 15 swings, while Matthew Amberge added seven kills with four digs. Tyler Jones handed out 26 assists with five kills and five digs, while Dan O'Keefe handed out 17 assists with seven digs.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Arcadia lost the match despite outscoring St. Joseph's 72-60. The Knights totaled 50 kills, five aces and 17 blocks while hitting .185 for the match, while the Golden Eagles hit .104 with 48 kills, six aces and six blocks. Arcadia totaled 17 serve errors to just six for St. Joseph's.
