GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Arcadia University men's basketball team dropped a 96-84 decision at the hands of Alvernia Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium on Senior Day. The Knights fell to 9-14 on the season and 4-10 in conference play, while the Crusaders improved to 14-9 overall and 8-6 in the MAC Commonwealth.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Arcadia found itself down early, as the visitors jumped out to an 11-5 lead in the game's first three minutes. The Crusaders led by as many as 18 in the opening 20 minutes, however the Knights would battle back in the second half.
Sophomore
Phil Pierfy netted the first five points of the second half to bring the Scarlet and Grey within six at 48-42, senior
Ryan Kelley went on to cut the deficit to 55-51 with a three just under five minutes into the frame. Following a 23-14 run, the Crusaders pushed their lead back to 13 with six minutes to go. A retaliatory 13-5 spurt from Arcadia had the Knights within five with 3:29 left on the clock, however they went on to shoot 3-11 down the stretch, while the opposition converted all four of its field goal attempts and 4-5 from the free throw line.
ARCADIA LEADERS: Sophomore
Josh Scott led Arcadia with 21 points on 7-9 (77.8%) shooting from the floor, including 3-4 (75%) from distance, while pulling in a game-high eight rebounds. Pierfy added 16 points, while Kelley contributed 14 and sophomore
Brandon Thompson scored 13 points.
ALVERNIA LEADERS: George Williams netted 36 points to lead all scorers, while Marquis Marshall dropped 24; Alex Shippen (16) and Mike Miller (12) rounded out the double-figure scorers. Shippen led the way on the glass with six rebounds, while tying for the team-lead in assists with four.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: The Knights finished the game shooting 44.9% (31-69) from the field, including 10-22 (45.5%) from distance, while going 12-15 (80%) at the charity stripe. The Crusaders Shot 61.1% (33-54) from the field, including 14-28 (50%) from beyond the arc, while going 16-23 (69.6%) at the free throw line.
