GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Arcadia University men's basketball team opened a 19-0 lead, before ultimately falling 107-96 to Lycoming in a MAC Commonwealth Championship Game rematch Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium. Sophomore
Josh Scott dropped a career-high 34 points to lead the Knights in the offensive end. Arcadia fell to 9-12 on the season and 4-8 in conference play, while the Warriors improved to 18-4 and 10-3 in the MAC Commonwealth.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Knights couldn't have asked for a better start, opening the game 6-7 from the floor, including 2-2 from distance, and converted 5-6 from the charity stripe for 19 points while holding the opposition scoreless for the first 5:14. Sophomore
Phil Pierfy laid in two of his career-best 26 points to extend the lead to a game-high 25 just over seven minutes in. At the end of the free throw-filled opening frame, the Knights maintained its double-digit lead at 55-42 at the half.
A 26-12 run to open the second half proved to be a turning point as the Warriors used the spurt, capped by a T.J. Duckett three, to capture its first lead of the day at 68-67. The squads exchanged slim leads over the next five minutes before the visitors established second half control with a 12-2 run over a span of just shy of three minutes to claim an eight-point margin with 4:20 left on the clock. Arcadia was efficient both from the floor (4-7) and the free throw line (5-7) down the stretch, but despite holding the visitors to just 1-5 shooting over the final 4:20, the Warriors were 14-14 from the charity stripe to secure the win.
ARCADIA LEADERS: Scott's career-best 34 points on 11-17 shooting and 10-11 effort from the charity stripe led all scorers. Pierfy's career day, along with senior
Ryan Kelley's 10 points rounded out the Knights double-figure scorers. Sophomore
Kyle Reilly led the way off the glass tying a game-high with seven rebounds, while classmate
Brandon Thompson led all players with six dimes.
LYCOMING LEADERS: The Warriors were led by 26 points from Chris Wallace on 9-10 shooting from the field and 8-10 shooting at the free throw line. T.J. Duckett contributed 21, with Nyk King dropping 20 and David Johnson adding 18. King matched a game-high seven boards, while Willie Kee handed out a team-leading four assists.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: The Knights shot 63.5% (33-52) from the floor, including 7-19 (36.8%) from distance, while converting 23-32 (71.9%) from the free throw line. Lycoming shot 47.1% (32-68) from the field, including 9-19 (47.4%) from beyond the arc, while converting 34-39 (87.2%) at the line. The visitors held the advantage in the paint (44-32), off turnovers (33-10) and second chance points (25-7).
