PUNTA GORDA, Fla. – Ninth-ranked College of Wooster scored four unanswered runs in the later innings of the game to record a 5-2 win over the Arcadia University baseball team at South County Regional Park Wednesday.
FOR THE RECORD: The Fighting Scots, who are ranked in the top-10 for the first time this season in the
D3Baseball.com Poll, remained undefeated on the season after recording their fourth consecutive win. The Knights fell to 8-3 with the loss, which ended their four-game winning streak. This was the first loss of Arcadia's spring break trip.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Arcadia loaded the bases with one away in the top of the first, but managed just one run after freshman
Phil Pierfy hit a liner off Wooster pitcher Tyler Schuch to plate sophomore
Bryan Gillen from third. The Fighting Scots drew even in the bottom of the second as Jamie Lackner drove a triple down the left field line and scored on Garrett Crum's single to center.
The Knights regained the lead in the top of the sixth as junior
Nick Cardace lifted a one-out fly ball to right that would allow senior
Jordan Draude to score from third, and Wooster was able to once again tie the score an inning later when Lackner scored on a sac-fly. The Fighting Scots went on to score three times in the bottom of the eighth before working out of another one-out bases loaded situation in the top of the ninth to secure the 5-2 win.
ON THE HILL: Michael Whitaker (1-0) scattered three hits and a walk over the final two innings of the game to record his first win of the season, while Schuch didn't factor in the decision after allowing two runs on two hits and three walks with 5 Ks over his 5.1 innings of work.
Junior
Mike Boulanger (0-3) took the loss for Arcadia after allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits and two walks over the final two innings. Sophomore
