PHILADELPHIA – The Arcadia University baseball team held on for an 11-10 game-two victory to gain a split of a non-conference doubleheader with visiting Rochester Institute of Technology Sunday at LaSalle University's Hank DeVincent Field. RIT won the first game of the day 11-2.
FOR THE RECORD: The Knights' record now stands at 3-1 this season. These were the first two games of 2017 for the Tigers.
GAME TWO: ARCADIA 11, RIT 10
HOW IT HAPPENED: RIT The two teams traded runs throughout the nightcap, which saw RIT go up 9-5 in the top of the sixth Patrick Mylott's RBI single to left and Will Gorman's two-RBI single into right. Sophomore
Zach Manasek was then brought into the game, and promptly recorded two quick outs to end the inning.
The Knights rallied with a five-run bottom of the seventh to regain the lead for good. Senior
Jordan Draude scored on an error with one out to start the run-scoring parade. Three batters later, sophomore
Luke Hohenstein drove a 1-1 pitch through the right side the plated freshman
Phil Pierfy, and an error by Gorman allowed junior
Nick Cardace to score on the play to cut the deficit to 9-8. Freshman
Tyler Wisnewski then tied the game by driving in Hohenstein with a triple to center field, and then scored the go-ahead run on a perfectly executed squeeze play by junior
Drew Coisson.
Draude scored again in the bottom of the eight on Pierfy's double to left, which proved to be the game-winner after the Knights held off a rally attempt by the Tigers in the ninth. Brett Kajganich singled to right and Benjamin Terzini walked to lead off the top of the ninth, but junior
Jake Lloyd responded with back-to-back Ks to bring Arcadia within one out of victory. Lloyd yielded an RBI-single to Dom Scialabba that put the tying run at second base before fanning Gage Blasi to end the game.
ON THE HILL: Freshman
Andrew Scholz picked up his first collegiate win after fanning two batters over 1.2 scoreless innings of work, while Lloyd picked up his second save after allowing one run on two hits while striking out five batters in the final two innings of the game. Daniel Capra took the loss for RIT after giving up five runs (three earned) on six hits and three walks over 3.2 innings of work.
ARCADIA AT BAT: Draude was 3 for 4 with three singles and three runs scored, while Hohenstein and Pierfy were both 2 for 4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored. Cardace finished the game 2 for with a double, two RBI and one run scored, while Wisnewski was 1 for 3 with a triple, one run scored and another driven in.
RIT AT BAT: Gorman was 3 for 4 with a triple, two RBI and two runs scored, while Kajganich was 2 for 4 with a triple, two RBI and two runs scored. Mylott went 2 for 5 with two runs scored and another drive in.
GAME ONE: RIT 11, ARCADIA 2
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Tigers scored the only three runs they would need in the top of the first; Gorman homered to right center field on a one-out, 3-2 pitch to open the scoring and Terzini scored what later proved to be the game-winning run from third as Mike Myers' grounded out to shortstop
Justin Chasmar. RIT pulled away with a four-run fifth inning and tacked on two more in the sixth to go up 10-2.
Chasmar drove in both runs for Arcadia in the game. He plated freshman
Avy Bermudez from third on a groundout to second and pushed Bermudez across the plater again in the fifth with an infield single.
ON THE HILL: Brian Reed allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits with three strikeouts over his five innings of work to record the win. Brett Bouchard allowed just one hit over his three innings of relief, while Nick Claver recorded an out on each of the three batters he faced in the ninth. Sophomore
Mike Boulanger took the loss for Arcadia, dropping his record to 0-1 after allowing seven runs on nine hits with four Ks over 4.1 innings.
ARCADIA AT BAT: Sophomore
Bryan Gillen was 2 for 3 with a pair of singles from the leadoff spot, while Bermudez was 1 for 2 with a double, a walk and two runs scored. Chasmar was 1 for 4 with a single and two RBI.
RIT AT BAT: Terzini finished 4 for 5 with a double, two runs scored and two driven in, while Kajganich ended the game 3 for 4 with three runs scored. Gorman finished 3 for 5 with two homers, one double, two RBI and three runs scored.
