Baseball Drops Series Opener to No. 24 Alvernia in Home Finale

PHILADELPHIA – The Arcadia University baseball team dropped a 9-4 decision to No. 24 Alvernia University Friday at Erny Field to open a three-game MAC Commonwealth series with the Crusaders. This marked the final regular season home game for the Knights. The two teams will meet against tomorrow at Alvernia for a conference doubleheader; Arcadia would need to win both games to earn the No. 1 seen in next week's MAC Commonwealth Championship Tournament.

FOR THE RECORD: The Crusaders improved to 25-10-2 overall and 14-5 in MAC Commonwealth play with the win, while the Knights fell to 27-10 overall and 13-6 in league play.

IN THE POLLS: Alvernia is ranked 24th in this week's D3Baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Poll and is receiving votes in the latest American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate Baseball Poll. Arcadia is receiving votes in both polls this week.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Crusaders led 2-1 heading into the top of the third, where they added a pair of runs on RBI singles from Nathan Sides and Matt Briner. Sides then drove in two more runs in the top of the fourth with his single to left to give Alvernia a 6-1 lead. Freshman Phil Pierfy cut Arcadia's deficit to 6-3 after driving a 3-1 pitch over the left field fence following a ground rule double from senior Justin Chasmar, but that was as close as Arcadia would get the rest of the way.

ON THE HILL: Thomas Malik (5-1) picked up the win for Alvernia after allowing three runs on five hits over his five innings of work. Senior Joseph Warren (5-1) took the loss for Arcadia, his first of the year, after allowing six runs (five earned) over 3.1 innings.

ARCADIA AT BAT: The Knights managed just six hits in the game. Pierfy was 2 for 4 with a double, a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored, while Chasmar went 3 for 4 with a double and two runs scored.

ALVERNIA AT BAT: Sides went 4 for 5 with four RBIs and a run scored, while Dillon Dunne was 2 for 4 with a RBI and a run scored. Briner was also 4 for 5 in the game with an RBI and a run scored.
