HARWICH, Mass. – The second-seeded Arcadia University baseball team saw its postseason run come to an end after dropping a 5-0 decision to fourth-seeded Salve Regina at the 2018 NCAA Division III New England Regional Saturday at Whitehouse Field.
FOR THE RECORD: The Seahawks improved to 36-11 with the victory and advances to face fifth-seeded Babson in another elimination game Saturday night. The Knights' season wraps up at 33-13, which is a program record for wins in a season.
IN THE POLLS: Salve Regina is ranked 20th in this week's American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate Baseball Poll and is ranked 22nd in the nation in the D3Baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Poll. Arcadia is ranked 25th this week by the ABCA and is receiving votes in the D3Baseball.com poll; the Knights earned a national ranking for the first time since 2005 this season.
ON THE HILL: Cory Poplawski (6-3) tossed a four-hit complete-game shutout for the Seahawks in which he recorded six strikeouts. Freshman
Jeremy Sabathne (3-3) took the loss despite tossing a gem, allowing just one run on six hits over his 5.1 innings of work.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Salve Regina scored the only run it would need in the bottom of the third. Brody Santilli started the frame with a single to center field and later scored on John Militano's double to left. The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the seventh, which saw Santilli scored on a sacrifice fly before a two-out error with the bases loaded allowed Militano and Hunter Sleeper to score, making it a 4-0 game. The Seahawks added one more run in the eighth for the 5-0 final.
The Knights were limited to just a couple quality scoring chances in the game. Arcadia left runners on first and second with two outs in the top of the first and put runners on second and third with one away in the top of the seventh, but were unable to get a run across. Arcadia then loaded the bases with two away in the top of the ninth, but again came up empty.
