READING, Pa. – Sophomore
Kristin Cancelliere sent a single through the right in the bottom of the ninth inning to propel the fourth-seeded Arcadia University softball team to a 3-2 win over fifth-seeded Hood Saturday morning in the opening game of the MAC Commonwealth Championship. The Knights are now 28-11 on the season, while Hood fell to 19-17.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Scarlet and Grey started the scoring in the bottom of the third. Cancelliere drove in junior
Nicole Iasiello with a sac fly to right field for the game's first run. The next at-bat, junior
Amanda Hess singled to the catcher to allow classmate
Kaylee Zarick to score from third. The Knights carried the momentum into the top of the fourth, when freshman pitcher
Kylee Schwind got out of the inning with just three pitches.
The Blazers got on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Jasmine Webster singled to left with one out in the frame to plate Maddy Collins from third for the first run. Kristin Scott sent a sac fly to right field in the next at-bat to bring Shelby Alcorn home from third to tie the game at two.
The tie remained into extra innings. Both teams saw a runner reach base courtesy of errors in the eighth inning before heading to the ninth. Schwind retired the side in order in the top of the ninth, before the first three batters reached for Arcadia in the bottom of the frame. That brought Cancelliere to the plate with the bases and no outs for the walk-off single.
ARCADIA LEADERS: Cancelliere led the way with two RBI in a 1-4 day, while Zarick led the team with a 2-4 outing. Iasiello, Hess, sophomores
Jackie Bilotti and
Kayla Resh and freshman
Julia Gessner each recorded a hit.
HOOD LEADERS: Webster, Alcorn, Kristy Erfurdt and Roo Saglimbeni all recorded base hits for the Blazers. Webster and Scott were responsible for driving in Hood's two runs.
IN THE CIRCLE: Schwind moved to 14-7 on the year as she picked up the win allowing two runs on four hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Sophie Leaman took the loss allowing three unearned runs on eight hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
