Dougherty’s Final Minute Tally Gives Field Hockey 2-1 Double Overtime Win at DeSales

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Freshman Lauren Dougherty scored her second game-winning goal of the season with 42 seconds left in the second overtime period, giving the Arcadia University field hockey team a dramatic 2-1 victory at DeSales Wednesday night.

FOR THE RECORD: The Knights improved to 4-1 for the season following their fourth straight win. The Bulldogs fell to 3-1 following their first loss of the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Knights took and early 1-0 lead on junior Lindsay Bechtold's third goal of the season. She took a centering feed from classmate Gabby Sedares and put it in the back of the cage 12:50 into the contest. The score remained that way until the 60th-minute when Chelsea DeFrancisco scored an unassisted goal to knot the score at 1-1. Both teams traded scoring chances throughout the remainder of regulation and the first overtime period but were unable to cash in.

DeSales had a golden opportunity to score on a series of three late corners in the second overtime after freshman goalkeeper Maya Stern was issued a green card with 5:32 remaining, which resulted in Arcadia having to use senior Liz Stierle as a kicking back in place of the goalkeeper due to the resulting corner. The Bulldogs managed just two shots in that span, one of which was saved by junior Kayla Brennan and the other went wide of the cage, allowing the Knights to gain possession and end the threat.

That set the stage for Dougherty's game-winner in the final minute after the Knights were awarded a penalty corner with just over a minute to go. The ball was inserted by sophomore Isabelle Houser to Dougherty, who took one step into the top of the circle before ripping a shot into the back of the cage for her team-leading eight goal of the year.

IN GOAL: Stern improved to 4-1 for the season after totaling 10 saves and facing 21 shots.  Katarina Polyviou, the reigning NFHCA Division III Defensive Player of the Week, recorded six saves and faced 14 shots.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:  DeSales outshot Arcadia 23-14 in the match and had a 13-8 advantage in shots on goal. Penalty corners also favored the Bulldogs, 16-12.
