GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Arcadia University women's volleyball team swept SUNY Canton 3-0 before falling 3-1 to Elizabethtown on the second day of the Knight Invitational.
FOR THE RECORD: The Knights now hold an 11-3 record on the season. SUNY Canton is 3-10, including a loss to Rowan earlier in the day. Elizabethtown is 9-3 including its win over Washington College earlier in the day.
ARCADIA 3, SUNY CANTON 0 (25-13, 25-21, 25-15)
HOW IT HAPPENED: After finding itself in an early 4-1 hole, the Knights rattled off six points in a row behind the serve of senior
Colleen Stengel to take a 7-4 lead. The lead would slowly increase until Arcadia scored six of the last seven points to claim the first set 25-13.
After jumping out to an early 5-2 lead in the second set, the Scarlet and Grey quickly saw its lead increase to 12-6. The Kangaroos battled back to within two at 21-19 before junior
Katie Wilson combined with Stengel then junior
Lizzie Joseph for back-to-back blocks to extend the lead to five before Arcadia took the set 25-21.
The third set was highlighted by a huge six-point run that took the Knights from a 9-7 lead to a 14-7 advantage. Freshman
Allison Elechko was on serve for the spurt, while sophomore
Shannon Ryan recorded two kills over the span. Ryan went on to cap a set clinching 7-2 run with a kill.
ARCADIA LEADERS: Joseph led the attack with 10 kills, while also contributing four total blocks and four digs. Stengel dished out 20 assists, while sophomore
Mackenzie Hale posted a team-high 11 digs. Sophomore
Emily Eng had three aces while junior
Kayla Resh had two.
SUNY CANTON LEADERS: The Kangaroos were led by Jordan Dormady with eight kills, while Peyton Robinson tied the match-high with 20 assists. Jenna Roat registered a dozen digs.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Arcadia outscored SUNY Canton 46-31 while hitting 15.1% as a team with 27 kills, seven aces, 12 blocks and 48 digs. The Kangaroos hit -5.6% with 23 kills, three aces, five blocks, 46 digs and 29 errors.
ELIZABETHTOWN 3, ARCADIA 1 (25-15, 18-25, 25-21, 25-18)
ARCADIA LEADERS: Freshman
Lauren Enfield fueled Arcadia's attack with 11 kills while also chipping 13 digs on the defensive end. Stengel registered 25 assists, while Eng posted 20 digs and five aces. Wilson recorded four blocks in the match, including three of the solo variety.
ELIZABETHTOWN LEADERS: Mackenzie Garner led the way with 15 kills and five blocks. Sarah Schneider added 13 kills with Elle Shatto contributing 12. Gabby Anders had 36 assists, while Aiyana Tietze-di Toro had 22 digs.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: The Blue Jays scored 59 points on 46 kills with five aces and 56 digs. Arcadia scored 51 points on 34 kills with 11 aces and 58 digs.
ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM: Joseph and Eng were elected as Arcadia's representatives on the All-Tournament Team. Elizabethtown's Mackenzie Garner, Rowan's Kailey Gallagher, Washington's Abby Smith, New Rochelle's Imani DeBose and SUNY Canton's Peyton Robinson were also selected to the team.
