GLENSIDE, Pa. – In its first game of a tri-match on Saturday, the Arcadia men's volleyball team won the first ever Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) sponsored men's volleyball contest, sweeping Widener, 3-0 (25-22, 25-8, 25-12). Later in the day, the Knights swept the Baruch Bearcats, 3-0 (25-20, 26-24, 25-22).
FOR THE RECORD:
- The Knights even out their record at 4-4 on the season, while sitting at 1-0 in the MAC.
- Widener drops to 0-1 on the year, with the same mark in the conference.
- Baruch slips to 3-5.
ARCADIA 3, WIDENER 0
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Scarlet and Grey pulled out to a 13-5 lead in the first set. Arcadia maintained a marginal lead over the Pride for most of the set. Widener rallied late to come within three when the Knights led, 23-20. The home team, however, would finish the set on top, 25-22. As a team, the Knights picked up 6.5 blocks in the set, while also registering six service aces.
- The second set was much different, seeing the Knights rush out to a 16-4 lead over the first 20 points. Arcadia would finish on a 9-4 run, capping the set, 25-8. The Knights hit .667 in the set, adding three services aces and four blocks.
- Arcadia completed the sweep, dashing out to a 14-6 lead through the first 20 points. The Knights would finish on a 11-6 run, taking the set victory, 25-12. The team hit .444 in the set, with four service aces.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Sophomore Jason Manley led the attack for the Scarlet and Grey, registering 10 kills in the match, hitting .562. Manley also notched two service aces.
- Sophomores Robie Moctezuma and Jarod Pichler each added five kills, with Moctezuma hitting .714 and Pichler hitting .400.
- Continuing the sophomore success, was Austin Braas, as he registered four kills, hitting .800.
- Freshman setter Anthony Devantier picked up 22 assists, while adding two kills and three service aces on the attack.
- As a team, the Knights recorded 13 services aces, 28 kills, and hit .426.
ARCADIA 3, BARUCH 0
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- In the first set against the Bearcats, the two squads went back-and-fourth for most of the set, before Arcadia held its largest lead at 22-17, keeping pace with the eventual set final of 25-20. In the set, the Knights registered 16 kills, hitting .300 as a team.
- The second set was an even closer fought battle, with the score squaring up at 11 apiece, before Arcadia pulled ahead 15-13. Baruch quickly responded, taking a 20-17 lead. After trading a few points, the Knights took control of the set with a 9-4 spurt, ending the set, 26-24. The squad collectively hit .387 with 15 kills.
- The final set continued the competitive nature of the previous two sets, seeing six different lead changes over the first 13 points. The Scarlet and Grey pulled ahead, 7-6, and held the lead for the remainder of the set. The Bearcats would pull within one at 10-9 and again at 23-22, but the Knights ultimately came out on top, 25-22.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Manley and classmate Edwin Waters Jr. each registered 10 kills for the Knights against Baruch. Pichler (6), Braas (6) and Moctezuma (5) all aided in the team effort to pick up 40 kills in the match.
- Devantier continued his success setting up his teammates, this time earning 32 assists.
NOTES:
- Waters Jr.'s 10 kills are a career high.
