Baseball Completes Sweep of Lebanon Valley With 8-5 Win

ANNVILLE, Pa. – The Arcadia baseball team bested Lebanon Valley 8-5 Sunday, completing the three-game sweep. Juniors Luke Hohenstein, Sean Carew and Nick Ponente led the Knights with two RBI each.
 
FOR THE RECORD:
  • The Scarlet and Grey improved to 10-2 on the year, and are off to a 3-0 conference start.
  • The Dutchmen fell to 3-8.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Arcadia plated a run in each of the first two innings, as junior Bryan Gillen scored on a Hohenstein sac fly in the first before freshman Trevor Mattson scored when sophomore Tyler Wisnewski reached on an error by the second baseman in the second inning.
  • The Knights tacked on three more in the bottom of the fifth, as Hohenstein scored during a double play three batters before Ponente sent a two-RBI single through the right side with two outs.
  • The Scarlet and Grey held a 6-5 lead heading to the bottom of the eighth. Gillen, who tripled in the previous at-bat, scored on a Hohenstein single down the left field line. Two batters later, Carew plated Hohenstein from second with a single up the middle.
  • Senior Connor Laigaie retired the side in order in the top of the ninth to end the game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Carew led the Knights with a 3-for-5 outing, that included a solo home run in the seventh, two RBI and two runs scored.
  • Gillen went 2-for-3 on the day, with both hits being triples.
  • Ponente, Mattson and senior Nick Cardace each posted two-hit games.
ON THE HILL:
  • Sophomore Andrew Scholz tossed seven innings in picking up his second win of the season; he allowed five runs (four earned) on nine hits with four strikeouts. Laigaie picked up his third save of the year in two shutout innings of work.
  • The Knights tagged Dutchmen starter Dylan Stephen (1-1) for five runs (one earned) on nine hits over five innings. Jake Williams surrendered three runs on six hits in three innings of relief.
NOTES:
  • Though the game was played at Lebanon Valley, the Knights batted as the home team.
  • Carew is currently on an eight-game hitting streak.
  • Gillen has reached base safely in 10 straight games, junior Phil Pierfy has reached safely in seven straight.
UP NEXT:
  • The Knights are back in action Wednesday afternoon, when they host Misericordia. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
