Baseball Entertains Widener in Home Opener

AMBLER, Pa. – The Arcadia baseball team fell to MAC Commonwealth foe, Widener, Wednesday afternoon by a score of 7-4. The game was the first to be played at the Knights' new home, Skip Wilson Field.
 
FOR THE RECORD:
  • The Scarlet and Grey now sit at 10-5 on the year and 3-1 in conference play.
  • The Pride own a 7-9 overall mark, including a 2-2 conference record.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Junior Phil Pierfy plated the leadoff man, senior Drew Coisson, on a groundout in the top of the first to help the Knights strike first.
  • Widener tied the game at one in the top of the fourth, before holding a 7-1 advantage after the fifth inning.
  • Arcadia plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. Coisson scored his second run of the day when junior Bryan Gillen tripled to right center in the frame's second at-bat. Pierfy followed with a double to center to bring in Gillen.
  • Gillen plated freshman Josh Fulmer in the top of the ninth with a two-out, bases loaded single through the left side.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Gillen led the Knights with a 3-4 outing that included a triple, two RBI and a run scored.
  • Pierfy matched Gillen with two RBI.
  • As a team, Arcadia totaled seven hits.
ON THE HILL:
  • Sophomore Rob Lichtenberger (1-1) got the start, allowing six runs on six hits in 4.1 innings of work. Junior Joel Bartoni closed out the game with 4.2 scoreless innings and four strikeouts.
  • Matthew Guarino (1-3) got the ball for Widener, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits in seven innings of work.
UP NEXT:
  • Arcadia is back in action tomorrow afternoon at Messiah. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
