Top of the Order Keys Baseball’s Win Over Susquehanna

AMBLER, Pa. – The Arcadia baseball team picked up a 15-11 win over Susquehanna Wednesday afternoon. The Knights were led by the top of the lineup as the first five batters all had a multi-hit game.

FOR THE RECORD:
  • The Scarlet and Grey board a 16-8 record.
  • The River Hawks dropped to 7-15.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The bats went to work early, plating four runs in three consecutive at-bats in the bottom of the first. Junior Luke Hohenstein scored as senior Nick Cardace reached on a fielder's choice, before freshman Brett Moyer drew a bases loaded walk to bring in junior Sean Carew. Sophomore Tyler Wisnewski followed with a fielder's choice that brought in junior Phil Pierfy; Cardace scored on the throw as the River Hawks attempted to complete the double play.
  • Five more runs crossed the dish in the bottom of the third, again on consecutive at-bats. Wisnewski singled with the bases loaded to plate Pierfy, before Cardace scored when junior Nick Ponente reached on an error by the first baseman. Moyer scored on a groundout by classmate Matt Ernst, before junior Bryan Gillen sent a single to center field to bring in Wisnewski and Ponente.
  • The bottom of the fifth saw five more runs score. Gillen plated Wisnewski with a sac fly to center, before Hohenstein and Carew hit back-to-back RBI singles. Carew then scored on a single by Pierfy to put the Knights up 14-2.
  •  Susquehanna scored seven in the top of the sixth and one in the top of the seventh. Hohenstein plated the final run of the game with a single through the left side in the bottom of the eighth.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Arcadia's 15 runs came on 16 hits.
  • The top five batters in Arcadia's order, Gillen, Hohenstein, Carew, Pierfy and Cardace, combined for 13 hits. Gillen, Carew and Pierfy all had three hits to lead the team.
  • Gillen drove in three runs, while Carew and Wisnewski each plated a pair.
  • Wisnewski went 2-for-3.
ON THE HILL:
  • Sophomore Tyler Showers (2-0) got the start, allowing five runs in five innings of work. Junior Nick Roda tossed 0.2 innings, followed by an inning from senior Ryan Ulrich. Hohenstein tossed a hitless 1.1 innings, before senior Mike Boulanger pitched the ninth inning.
