GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Arcadia softball team picked up a pair of shutout wins Thursday, besting Penn State Abington, 2-0, in game one and, 4-0, in game two. Sophomore
Hayley Friess shined in game two with a pair of extra-base hits, including her first home run in an Arcadia uniform.
FOR THE RECORD:
- The Scarlet and Grey are now 16-12 on the year.
- The Nittany Lions fell to 6-16.
GAME ONE: ARCADIA 2, PENN STATE ABINGTON 0
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Freshman Alex DeStefano scored both runs for the Knights. The Ringoes, N.J. native scored the first run in the bottom of the third as classmate Alexis Burge reached on an error by the center fielder. Burge then plated DeStefano with a sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the sixth.
- In the circle, freshman Brooke Ward allowed just two runners past second base, before capping the game by striking out all three batters in the top of the seventh.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- DeStefano and sophomore Tori Zangrilli each had a base hit, with the former's being a triple.
- Burge drove in one run.
IN THE CIRCLE:
- Ward (2-1) fanned a season-high seven batters in seven scoreless innings of work.
- Becca Dougherty allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits in six innings for the Nittany Lions.
GAME TWO: ARCADIA 4, PENN STATE ABINGTON 0
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Junior Jackie Bilotti was the first to cross the dish in the nightcap, doing so on a double to left center by sophomore Hunter Schantz in the top of the first.
- Friess was responsible for the next three runs. After leading off the second with a triple to right field, the sophomore scored on a single to right field by junior Kayla Resh. In the next inning, she smashed a two-run dinger over the center field fence.
- In the circle, Resh allowed just one runner past second base and retired the side in order in each of the last two innings.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Friess went 2-for-3 in the game with a triple, home run, two RBI and two runs scored.
- Bilotti, Schantz, Resh, freshman Alexa Vardiman, junior Kristin Cancelliere and senior Amanda Hess all registered a base hit.
- Schantz and Resh drove in a run.
IN THE CIRCLE:
- Resh (2-1) struck out a career-high nine batters and allowed just three hits in seven innings of work.
- Dougherty (6-12) allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits in six innings.
NOTES:
- Cancelliere is on a six-game hit streak.
- The Knights' seven-game winning streak is program's longest since winning seven in a row back in 2014.
UP NEXT:
- The Knights are back in action Saturday afternoon when it travels to Messiah. Game one is set to begin at 1 p.m.
