Baseball on Seven Game Win Streak After 10-8, Extra-Inning Triumph Over Hood

FREDERICK, Md. – The Arcadia baseball team plated three runs in the top of the 10th inning to pick up a 10-8 win at Hood Friday. The win extends the Knights streak to straight victories.
 
FOR THE RECORD:
  • The Scarlet and Grey own a 21-8 record, and are 11-3 in conference play.
  • The Blazers are now 26-6 overall and 10-6 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Arcadia jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Junior Bryan Gillen opened the scoring by crossing the dish as senior Nick Cardace reached on a fielding error by the shortstop. Two batters later, junior Luke Hohenstein drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in junior Sean Carew, before Cardace scored on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Tyler Wisnewski.
  • The Knights found themselves down one heading to the fourth inning, until freshman Josh Fulmer singled to left field to plate junior Nick Ponente.
  • The 4-4 tie was broken in the top of the fifth when Hohenstein doubled to right field to bring in Cardace two batters before scoring on a Ponente single to center field. Hood scored two in the bottom of the frame.
  • Each team scored a run in the sixth, with Arcadia's coming of a solo home run to left field by Carew. The score was tied at seven following the bottom of the inning.
  • After Gillen led off the top of the 10th with a double to left field, Carew traded places with him by doubling to center field. Ponente and freshman Matt Ernst drew back-to-back two-out walks with the bases loaded to finish the team's scoring
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Gillen, Carew and Ponente led the offense with three hits apiece; Gillen and Carew each had a pair of doubles.
  • Carew, Hohenstein and Ponente each drove in two runs.
  • Cardace drew three walks, while Ponente walked twice.
  • The Knights stole four bases.
ON THE HILL:
  • Senior Mike Boulanger (4-0) picked up the win in relief after allowing just two runs while striking out two in 5.2 innings of work. Junior Joel Bartoni got the start, striking out three in 4.1 innings.
  • Jake Howell (3-1) took the loss, allowing three runs on three hits in 1.2 innings. Ryan Atkinson surrendered four runs on four hits with five walks in the first four innings.
NOTES:
  • With his team-leading 16th multi-hit game, Gillen has reached safely in all 29 games this season.
  • Carew registered his team-best 13th multi-RBI game.
  • Pierfy is on a 10-game hit streak and has reached safely in 18-straight games.
  • Hohenstein and Carew have each reached safely in 14-straight games.
UP NEXT:
  • The Knights and Blazers wrap up their three-game series tomorrow at Skip Wilson Field. Game one is set for a noon start.
