Gillen’s 5-for-5 Day Powers Hot Offense in Baseball’s Win at Alvernia

READING, Pa. – The Arcadia baseball team took the rubber match of its MAC Commonwealth series with Alvernia, 17-8. The Knights pounded out 19 hits on the day, including five from junior Bryan Gillen.

FOR THE RECORD:
  • The Scarlet and Grey own a 14-7 record on the year, and are 6-2 against conference opponents.
  • The Golden Wolves drop to 17-8 overall and 9-3 in the MAC Commonwealth.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Knights found themselves down 4-2 heading to the fourth inning, before plating four runs in the top of the frame. Junior Nick Ponente plated classmate Luke Hohenstein three batters before Gillen drove in freshman Matt Ernst with a single to tie the game at four. Two batters later, sophomore Phil Pierfy sent a two-out, bases-loaded single to center field to give Arcadia the 6-4 lead.
  • The Scarlet and Grey plated runs on back-to-back plays in the top of the sixth, as junior Sean Carew drove in sophomore Tyler Wisnewski on a groundout before Gillen scored on a wild pitch during the next at-bat.
  • Two batters after Ernst gave the Knights a 9-6 lead with an RBI single in the top of the seventh, Gillen sent a base-loaded, one-out offering over the fence in left field for a grand slam and a 13-6 Arcadia lead.
  • Three more runs came home in the top of the eighth, first when Hohenstein scored as Ernst reached on an error, then on back-to-back RBI singles from Carew and Pierfy.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Gillen's 5-for-5 outing came with a home run, five RBIs, five runs scored and two stolen bases.
  • Hohenstein went 4-for-6 with a double and four runs scored.
  • Carew and freshman Brett Moyer each went 3-for-4; Carew drove in three runs.
  • Pierfy totaled three RBIs, while Ernst plated two.
ON THE HILL:
  • Sophomore Andrew Scholz (3-2) tossed 7.2 innings, allowing eight runs (six earned) and striking out two. Hohenstein retired the only batter he faced, while Pierfy tossed a scoreless ninth.
  • Nicholas Marotta (3-1) allowed six runs on nine hits in 3.2 innings of work. The Knights tagged Aaron Kulp for a pair of runs in 2.1 innings, Tim Cafrey for five runs in 0.1 innings and Frank Merlino for four runs (two earned) in 1.2 innings.
