OWINGS MILLS, Md. --
Da'Kquan Davis' layup with under 3.0 seconds to play capped a wild finish and lifted the Arcadia men's basketball team to a 79-78 win at Stevenson on Saturday afternoon.
Â
The Knights improved to 16-3 on the season and remained perfect in the MAC Commonwealth with a 10-0 ledger. Stevenson fell to 12-7 overall and is now 6-4 in league play and in fourth place in the standings.
Â
Trailing 78-75 with 15 seconds to play,
Josh Scott was fouled on a drive to the hoop with eight seconds to play. In addition to the shooting foul, the Mustangs were also assessed a flagrant foul as Scott was dragged to the ground at the end of the play.
Â
Trailing by three points, Scott was awarded four free throws, two for the shooting foul and two more for the flagrant. With a chance to take the lead, Scott missed the first two, but made good on his second two attempts to pull the Knights within 78-77.
Â
Granted possession following the free throws by virtue of the flagrant foul, the Knights inbounded from beneath the Stevenson basket. Davis got the ball at the top of the key and drove to his right, converting a layup in traffic with under three seconds to play and putting AU on top 79-78.
Â
Stevenson inbounded quickly looking to push the ball up court, but Scott stole the ball from Stevenson's Walt English clinching the win in dramatic finish for the Scarlet & Grey.
Â
The Knights held a 37-32 lead at the break, but the Mustangs opened the second half on a 7-2 run to quickly tie the game at 39-39 and eventually take a 51-49 lead on two free throws by Evan Joseph with 10:55 to play.
Â
The Mustangs' lead grew to as many as eight points (72-64) with 2:32 left before the Knights began chipping away at their deficit. Scott knocked down a pair of free throws 11 seconds later to make it six-point game, and
Steve Pendleton's layup with 1:56 to play cut the deficit to four (72-68).
Â
Pendleton converted two free throws at the 58-second mark to make it 72-70, but Stevenson answered quickly with a layup by Mark Terrell for a two-possession game once more with 45 seconds left.
Â
A Scott layup with 34 seconds left was answered by two free throws from Marcus Dentley to make it a four-point game once more (76-72) with 29 seconds left. Davis inched AU to within one (76-75) with a three-point play with 23 seconds to play before the game's frantic final seconds.
Â
Davis and Scott led the Knights with 16 points apiece.
Jon Lott added 11 points, and Pendleton and
Kyle Reilly scored 12 and 10 points, respectively, as part of a 27-point night from AU's bench. Davis and
Phil Pierfy each pulled down six rebounds, and Reilly added two blocks and two steals.
