Men's Soccer Upsets Lycoming, Defense Holds Strong Behind Resilient Back Four

GLENSIDE, Pa. - The Arcadia University men's soccer team upset Lycoming College, 1-0, behind a resilient defensive effort on Saturday night.

Matt BerndlmaierAyo AdeneganConnor Wright and Bryan Reyes played a full 90-minutes to keep the Warriors scoreless and help Jake Varrato earn his fifth clean sheet of the season. Colin Lankau, who had a strong game in the midfield, also played a full 90-minutes for the Knights.

Duncan O'Connor provided the game's lone goal in the 20th minute with an assist from Adenegan, who played one of his best games of the season on both ends of the field.

The Knights defeated Lycoming for the first time since Oct. 20, 2012. The Warriors have appeared in five of the last six MAC Commonwealth Championships, beating Messiah College three times during their playoff runs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Adenegan set up the game's lone goal with a strike from 40-yards out. The defenseman elevated his pass over traffic and played the ball to O'Connor at the far post. The junior captain timed his jump perfectly, beat his defender and lifted the shot above the leaping keeper to the opposite post.

- The Knights defense, which hung tough the entire evening, faced their biggest challenge in the final five minutes. The Warriors earned four corner kicks within a two-minute span, but were turned away each time by Arcadia's defense. The Knights displayed their toughness by winning aerial battles and limiting Lycoming's touches in the box.

- Although Varrato was only credited with three saves, he limited the opposition's scoring opportunities with aggressive challenges and tough physical play. The sophomore keeper put his body on the line to make countless leaping grabs, which defused potential scoring opportunities.

TEAM COMPARISON
- The Warriors held a slim 10-8 shots advantage, but earned six corner kicks while holding the Knights to two.
- All of Lycoming's corner kicks were in the second half with four occurring in the final five minutes.
