GLENSIDE, Pa. - The No.15 Arcadia University women's soccer team advanced to its fifth-straight MAC Commonwealth title game with a 2-0 victory over visiting Stevenson Thursday night in the semifinal matchup, as the Knights were lifted by
Karlie Flowers' team-leading eighth goal and a second-half score from
Amanda McHugh. The Knights' back line stayed true to form in the effort, limiting the Mustangs to just two shots on goal on the night while out-shooting the visitors 10-1 in the second half.
With the victory, the Knights move on to face top-seeded Messiah Saturday for the fifth-consecutive season in the MAC Commonwealth Championship as Arcadia aims to take home its second title in the last five seasons (in 2017). The Falcons advanced to the title match following a 6-0 defeat of fourth-seeded Albright earlier this evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Stevenson threatened to net the game's first goal in the opening minutes of the match when the Mustangs controlled posession in the Arcadia third and offered a cross into the center of the box, but the point blank shot was blocked by goalkeeper
Brianna Williams and cleared out of the area.
-
Jules Oswald's offering into the box from the left edge in the 12th minute met
Megan Mannato perfectly at the far post, whose header ricocheted off the crossbar and fell to the left foot of
Riley Nyhus but her shot hit the post for the Knights' first scoring opportunity.
-The Knights broke through in the 30th minute when
Morgan Giordano's header deflected off the crossbar and rebounded right to Flowers in front of the net who cleaned it up for her team-leading eighth goal of the season as Arcadia took a one-goal lead into the break.
-Arcadia nearly doubled its lead in the opening minutes of the second half when
Bridget Sway found
Erin Vander Plaat at the far post, but her header on goal was met by a Stevenson save.
-
Mackenzie Hoffman had a pair of chances in the 79th and 82nd minutes, respectively, but her one-timer shot and subsequent header on goal both sailed just above the woodwork.
-The Knights put the game away and thwarted a Mustang chance to equalize in the 88th minute when
Emily Readinger's service into the box was met by a perfectly-timed header McHugh header into the back of the net, lifting Arcadia to a 2-0 victory.
