Baseball Outslugged by No. 8 Swarthmore, 13-7

PORT CHARLOTTE, FLA. – The Arcadia baseball team got down early and was able to muster a comeback, as it fell to Swarthmore 13-7 in an early-morning contest on Thursday. With the defeat, the Knights move back to .500 on the young season to 4-4 as the Garnet improve to 6-3.
 
Swarthmore kicked things off in the second when Terrell Dale, who in his only at-bat as a pinch hitter, slapped a ball back up the middle, knocking in two runs. The Garnet went on to tally four more in the inning on a two-run double by Jared Gillian and a two-RBI triple by Cole Bleeker. The scoring flurry was capped off by a Jackson Robert single into centerfield, allowing Bleeker to walk home from third, putting Swarthmore up 6-0 after two.
 
The Garnet added one run each in the third and fourth frames, pushing their lead up to 8-0. The Knights began their comeback attempt in the bottom of the fifth on a RBI single by Dylan Towey that scored Josh Fulmer. Towey later scored on a Swarthmore error for Arcadia's second run, setting the score at 8-2.
 
In the seventh inning, the two squads combine to score eight runs. In the top half, the Garnet scored three runs on four hits (all singles), extending their lead to 11-2 heading into the bottom of the inning. The Knights exploded for five runs on five hits in the frame as Matt Ernst walked, stole second, and was knocked in by a Bryan Gillen single to spark the rally. A Sean Carew double plated Gillen, followed by a RBI single by Phil Pierfy to score Towey, who singled. After Zak Thomas reached on fielder's choice that pushed in Carew, a bases loaded walk to Josh Fulmer cut the deficit to 11-7.

A Roberts two-run single in the top of ninth secured the 13-7 win for Swarthmore as Arcadia went down 1-2-3 to end the game.
 
Ricky Conti (2-0) picked up the win for the Garnet as he went 6.2 innings, allowing seven runs (6 ER) on 10 hits, while striking out six and walking three. Matthew Loomis and Charles Groppe went the final 2.1, not giving up a hit and walking two.
 
For the Scarlet & Grey, Rob Litchtenberger (0-1) only lasted 1.2 innings, surrendering six runs on six hits as he fanned four and allowed two free passes. Luke Fournier came on in relief for the next 4.1 innings followed by Owen Margolis and Nick Fossile who finished off the final three innings.

The Knights offense was guided by two hits apiece from Trevor Mattson and Dylan Towey and Ernst walked twice, scored two runs and stole a base as well.
 
Arcadia gets a day off before facing Messiah in a three-game series on Saturday and Sunday before heading back to campus. First pitch in game on Saturday is set for 1 p.m.
