Baseball Spilts With Widener on Sunday

AMBLER, Pa. – The Arcadia baseball team split with Widener 11-7 and 4-2, respectively, Sunday afternoon at Skip Wilson Field. Today's games marked the first two true home games of the season for the Knights. With the split, the Scarlet & Grey's record sits at 10-5 overall.

Widener 11, Arcadia 7
A five-run, and a pair of three-run, innings doomed the Knights as they dropped game one.

AU shot out to a 2-0 lead in the first on a Phil Pierfy RBI single and Trevor Mattson fielder's choice, scoring Bryan Gillen and Dylan Towey, respectively. The Knight tacked on another run in the next inning on a Towey fielder's choice, bringing the score to 3-0.

The top of the third inning saw the Pride thrust ahead with a five-run outburst. In the frame, Widener took advantage of two walks, two wild pitches and a hit batter, to go along with three hits of its own.  Bryce Fremgen doubled to drive in Brandon Reis for the fifth run to take the 5-3 advantage, knocking out the Knights' starting pitcher Tyler Showers.

The Scarlet & Grey grabbed one run back in the bottom half of the frame on an RBI groundout by Nick Ponente, bringing in Mattson, who reached via an infield error.

In the fifth, Widener loaded the bases with no outs to start the inning, forcing in one run each on a walk, a single and another free pass. The three tallies extended the Prides' lead to 8-4.

AU garnered two runs in the home half of the fifth on RBI singles by Zak Thomas and Gillen, bringing in Mattson and Thomas, cutting the deficit to 8-6.

Widener put the game out of reach in the seventh as it plated three runs on two hits and two errors. Five straight batters reached base to begin the frame. The big blow came on a bases loaded hot shot past a drawn in Knights infield, bringing in two runs. A sacrifice fly by Nick D'Alessandro capped off the scoring for the Pride.

Arcadia managed to push a run across in the bottom of the seventh on a double by Towey, driving in Matt Ernst, but it was not enough as Widener took game one, 11-7.

Gillen and Thomas led the charge offensively for the Knights with three hits apiece. Towey chipped in two base knocks of his own as well.

Showers (1-3) was saddled with the defeat for the Knights as he only lasted 2.2 innings, surrendering five runs on three hits, while walking four. Nick Fossile and Luke Fournier pieced together the final 4.0 innings, allowing six runs (3 ER) on eight hits.

For the Pride, Dylan Peiffer (3-1) earned the win in his 4.2 innings of work as he allowed six runs (5 ER) on eight hits, with four walks and three strikeouts.

Arcadia 4, Widener 2
In game two, Joel Bartoni  (4-0) went the full 7.0 innings for the Knights as he scattered eight hits and gave up two runs while fanning five.

All six runs came in the first three innings with the Pride slipping across a run in the top of the first on a D'Alessandro single bringing in Greg Elfreth.

The Knights responded with two tallies in the home half of the first on an RBI double by Sean Carew, as Gillen raced all the way home from first. The second run came on a dropped fly ball of the bat of Mattson, allowing Carew to scurry home.

AU added a run in the second on a sacrifice fly by Gillen, and the Pride pushed one across in the top of the third on a Brannon Reis single, making the score 3-2 in favor of the Knights.

In the bottom of the third, Phil Pierfy legged out a lead-off triple to left center. Mattson followed with a sacrifice fly to centerfield, allowing Pierfy to trot home for the insurance run, securing the 4-2 win.

Five Knights tallied a base hit led by Anthony Zupito's two doubles.

Jake Good (1-1) picked up the loss for Widener as he battled through 2.2 innings, giving up four runs (3 ER) on five hits.

Arcadia returns to The Skip on Tuesday as they face Misericordia in mid-week action. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
