Softball Sweeps Doubleheader in Dramatic Fashion

GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Arcadia softball team swept a doubleheader from Alvernia in dramatic fashion Saturday afternoon at Blankley Field. The Knights prevailed 9-1 in six innings in the opener, then walked-off the Golden Wolves 2-1 in the nightcap.

With the sweep, the Knights improved to 20-8 on the season and 8-2 in the MAC-Commonwealth, while the Golden Wolves slipped to 21-12-1 and 9-3 in the conference.

Arcadia 9, Alvernia 1 (6 Innings)
Tori Zangrilli hit a game-winning, two-run single with two outs in the sixth to lift AU to a game one win.

Alex DeStefano kicked off the scoring in the first on a single to right center to plate Kristin Cancelliere, who tripled to begin the game. Jackie Bilotti followed with a triple of her own down the right field line to score DeStefano, giving AU an early 2-0 lead.

The Scarlet & Grey tacked on two more runs in the third on a Hunter Schantz single, bringing around DeStefano, and an Alexis Burge RBI groundout.

Alvernia pushed across a tally in the top of the sixth as Sarah Bystrycki singled home Morgan Psiuk, cutting the deficit to 4-1.

In the home half of the sixth, the Knights used five hits, a walk and a hit batter to score five runs. The outburst was capped off by the two-run, two-out single by Zangrilli to win game one 9-1.

AU amassed 13 hits led by three hits from Cancelliere in the lead-off spot. Four other Knights tallied two base knocks apiece. Bilotti and Zangrilli each drove in two runs each.

Riley Shields, who was saddled with the loss, recorded two hits at the plate. In the circle, she worked 5.2 innings, allowing all nine runs (8 ER) on 11 hits and three walks. Kealey Smith entered in the sixth and surrendered two hits to the two batters she faced.

Mary Pat Murray continued her dominance on the bump for the Knights, picking up her 10th win. Murray went the distance once again as she permitted one unearned run on five hits, while striking out six.

Arcadia 2, Alvernia 1
Bekah Good hit a chopper with enough force to allow Brooke Ward to dart home from third, barely beating out a throw, to win game two in dramatic fashion, 2-1.

Psiuk put the Golden Wolves on the board first with a RBI double to centerfield in the third inning.

That score held until Schantz unloaded on a solo home run to deep left field in the sixth, tying the game at 1-1.

Alvernia went down 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh, setting the stage for the Knights.

Ward pinch ran for Julia Gessner, who was hit by a pitch to begin the frame. Ward then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch during Zangrilli's at-bat, who ended up walking. Good entered next as a pinch hitter for Marchesani. Good hit a one-hopper to the second baseman who threw home, but Ward slid in just under the tag to win game two for AU, 2-1.

Four Knights tallied a base hit each, as Psiuk and Analise Fourace picked up two hits apiece for the Golden Wolves.

Kylee Schwind cruised through the contest to notch her seventh win of the season. Schwind scattered six hits, allowing one run, while fanning six.

As for Alvernia, Ally Decker allowed two runs on four hits and one walk in the complete game loss.

Arcadia heads to Widener for a mid-week doubleheader on April 17. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
