Nittany Lions No Match for Arcadia Softball

GLENSIDE, Pa. -- The Arcadia softball team ran its win streak to five with a doubleheader sweep of Penn State Abington on Tuesday night. The Scarlet & Grey opened with a 6-2 win, then cruised to a 9-1 win in five innings to end the night.

The Knights, winners of five straight and 8 of 9, are now 14-6 on the season. The Nittany Lions fall to 7-12 on the year.

Arcadia 6, Penn State Abington 2
Brenna Dolan allowed just two runs (0 ER) in 4.0 inning to pick up her first-career win, and Morgan Marchesani was 2 for 3 with a pair of runs scored for Arcadia. The Nittany Lions scored a pair of runs on an AU fielding error in the first, but that is all they offense they would generate against the Knights.

A leadoff walk and a one-out single gave AU two runners aboard in the bottom of the second. Following a strikeout, Marchesani loaded the bases with a single, and Kristin Cancelliere brought home the first run with a single back to the circle to make it 2-1. A wild pitch moved each runner up 60 feet and Jackie Zwicker scored to tie the game at 2-2.

Alexis Burge put the Knights up 3-2 with an RBI single in the third that plated Jackie Bilotti, and Bilotti made it 4-2 in the fourth with an RBI single to left that scored Marchesani. Hunter Schantz capped the scoring with a two-run single in the sixth.

Dolan (1-0) gave up five hits and three walks with four strikeouts in 4.0 innings. Kylee Schwind pitched 3.0 innings in relief, surrendering just one hit and three walks with six punchouts.

Arcadia 9, Penn State Abington 1 (5 Inn.)
In the nightcap, it was the Nittany Lions that struck first again, getting an unearned run in the first to take an early 1-0 lead. Arcadia struck for three in the bottom of the frame and the rout was on from there.

Bilotti led off with a walk and promptly stole second. She moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Alexa Vardiman and scored when Zwicker single back up the middle. A walk to Alexis Burge and then a wild pitch gave the Knights runners on second and third with one out. Both Burge and Zwicker and scored on a wild pitch coupled with an errant throw by the Nittany Lions' catcher to take a 3-1 lead.

Two innings later, AU struck for five runs, including a long, three-run home run off the bat of Julia Gessner and a two-run triple off the fence in left center by Bilotti to extend the lead to 8-1. The game-clinching run scored with Vardiam drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Brooke Ward (2-0) went 4.0 innings, allowing just one unearned run on one hit. She didn't walk a batter and struck out one. Mary Pat Murray pitched the final inning and struck out two.

Bilotti reached base three times, walking twice in addition to her triple. She scored once and drove in two. Tori Zangrilli was 2 for 2 with a run, and Zwicker finished 1 for 2 with a walk and scored twice.

Arcadia will play host to Messiah in a doubleheader on Thursday beginning at 3 p.m.
