CHESTER, Pa. -- Fourth-seeded Widener knocked off fifth-seeded Arcadia on Monday night in the first round of the MAC Commonwealth Conference Championships at Quick Stadium.
Â
The Knights' 2019 season ends at 9-9 overall, marking the most wins in a season and the first time an AU team has finished .500 or better. Widener improves to 7-10 overall and will take on top-seeded Stevenson on Wednesday.
Â
Clo Muscara led the Knights with seven points on five goals and a pair of assists. Already the program's single-season goals leader, he became the first Knight to eclipse 50 goals in a season and wraps up his junior campaign with 53.
Wesley Sporer added four goals,
Joe Pedisich added a goal and two assists, while
Tanner Pajakinas chipped in a goal and an assist.
Â
Defensively,
Parker Hartline and
Joe Trovato caused two turnovers apiece.
Josh Keitz led the Scarlet & Grey with six ground balls. In goal, Brendan Kuzminksi made a career-high 16 goals in the loss.
Â
Muscara opened the scoring at 13:12 of the first quarter, and added his 50th of the season with 3:49 left in the period to tie the game at 2-2. The Pride closed the first quarter with a goal and opened the second with another for a 4-2 lead at the 11:55 mark. Sporer answered quickly for AU to make it 4-3 just 27 seconds later, but WU's Connor Heisman tallied back-to-back goals to give the home team a 6-3 lead. Widener eventually took a 7-4 lead into the break.
Â
In the second half, Muscara opened the scoring once more to spark a 3-1 run by the Knights. After another Heisman score, Pedisich and Sporer scored for the Knights as they inched within a single goal at 8-7 with 8:11 left in the third.
Â
That would be as close as the Knights would get, however. Three straight goals from the Pride gave WU an 11-7 lead. Muscara and Sporer got two of them back for the Scarlet & Grey, but Widener answered with three unanswered, including two more by Heisman to push its lead to 14-9 with 12:16 to play.
Â
Heisman finished with six goals and an assist for Widener, and Brady Franks added five goals and one assist. Bryan Facciani caused four turnovers and picked up three ground balls, and Matt Horton made 12 saves in the cage.
