Baseball Falls to Alvernia in MAC Commonwealth Championship

YORK, Pa. – The Arcadia baseball team fell to Alvernia, 10-1 in the second game of the 2019 MAC Commonwealth Championship Thursday night at PEOPLEsBank Park in York, Pa.
 
With the win, the second-seeded Golden Wolves (26-13-2) advance to play No. 4 seed Widener Friday at 11 a.m. in the winner's bracket, while Arcadia (24-16) will play No. 1 Hood in the tournament's first elimination game. That contest will be played Friday at 3 p.m.
 
The Golden Wolves started the scoring in the bottom of the second inning as Logan Levan laced a single into right field to drive in two runs, to go ahead 2-0.
 
Alvernia broke the game open in the fifth with five runs on seven hits. In the frame, Mike Cirilli knocked in two teammates on a double to left center. Nathan Sides, the 2019 MAC Commonwealth Player of the Year, followed suit with a two-run double of his own. Colin Rieger capped the outburst with an RBI groundout to plate Sides, pushing the lead to 7-0.
 
That score held until the bottom of the seventh inning when the Golden Wolves tallied three more runs on three hits. Cirilli drove in a run on a double down the left field line, and Matt Briner roped a single through the right side to send two more runners in to score, extending the advantage to 10-0.
 
The Scarlet & Grey strung together three hits in the ninth to put across one run. The lone run came on a Bryan Gillen infield single to bring in Brian Siket who entered as a pinch hitter earlier in the inning.
 
Offesively, Arcadia was led by two hit nights from Phil Pierfy, Nick Ponente and Zachary Sekelick.
 
As for Alvernia, Levan was the spark plug as he tallied three hits and knocked in two runs. Four others tallied two hits apiece. Cirilli did the most damage for the Golden Wolves as he recorded three RBI as three others knocked in two runs each.
 
Jeremy Sabathne (6-4) received the starting nod on the mound for the Knights and battled through 4.0 innings, allowing seven runs on 11 hits and one walk. Luke Fournier worked the next 2.1 innings, giving up three runs on four hits and four walks with four strikeouts. Nick Roda entered for the final 1.2 frames for Arcadia.
 
As for the Golden Wolves, Tim Carfrey pitch well over 6.0 innings, not permitting a run while scattering six hits and striking out five. Christian Burrus was the first out of the bullpen as allowed two hits over the next 2.0 innings. Matt Brennan pitched the final frame in which he gave up one run on three hits.
