GLENSIDE, Pa. - The Arcadia University men's basketball team trailed by as much as 15 in the first half of Wednesday night's MAC Commonwealth matchup with Alvernia, but a career-high 44 points from
Da'Kquan Davis and 25 from
Steve Pendleton lifted the Knights to a critical conference victory in double-overtime, 94-88.
The Knights shot 56.6 (17-30) in the second half to battle all the way back, but an Alvernia layup with 3.8 seconds remaining in regulation sent the two sides to two overtime periods, where a
Jacob Walsh three and clutch field goals from Davis and Pendleton were ultimately too much for the Golden Wolves in the second overtime as Arcadia continues its march towards a MAC Commonwealth postseason berth.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Knights got out to a tough start offensively, going 0-for-7 from the field while falling victim to a 13-0 Alvernia run in the opening minutes. Arcadia was able to cut the deficit down to nine just under the halfway point of the opening half and, despite 14 points from Davis in the first 20 minutes, the Knights were unable to overcome a 41.4 (12-29) shooting percentage from the Golden Wolves and headed into the break trailing, 34-23.
-The Knights came storming out of the break, starting the second half on an 18-3 run capped off by Pendleton's off-balance runner to the left of the paint and then completed the three-point play to give Arcadia its first lead of the night at the 14:19 mark. Davis began to catch fire with a couple of threes from well beyond the arc and Arcadia led by as much as much as 11 with three minutes left in regulation. However, the Golden Wolves refused to bow down and found themselves down two with possession following an Arcadia turnover and ran the game clock all the way down before hitting the tying layup with 3.8 seconds left, sending the game to overtime tied at 70.
-Despite Alvernia leading for a majority of the first overtime period,
Jacob Walsh and Davis each provided game-tying layups in the final minute, with Davis' proving critical as the Knights were able to hold off the Golden Wolves on their final possession to send the contest to a second overtime.
-Tied at 84 with just under three minutes remaining in the second overtime, Walsh buried an open three and Davis hit a pair of jumpers down the stretch forcing Alvernia to foul to regain possession. The Knights went 5-for-6 from the line in the final 1:24 of the game, clinching the 94-88 victory.
