Softball Drops Two to Misericordia Thursday

GLENSIDE, Pa. - The Arcadia University softball team played its first games at Blankley Field Thursday afternoon, hosting Misericordia in a non-conference doubleheader. The Knights dropped both ends of the doubleheader by 4-1 decisions.

Mary Pat Murray turned in a solid performance in the circle in game two, tossing a complete game while yielding only one earned run and striking out ten. Murray also drove in the lone Knights' run with a double to center in the home half of the fifth.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Cougars threatened in the opening inning by loading the bases with two outs, but Kylee Schwind evaded trouble with a backwards K to strand all three runners.

-Misericordia was first on the board in the top of the second as a two-out walk and three-straight hits resulted in a pair of Cougar runs.

-After the Cougars padded their lead with a two-run homer in the sixth, the Knights staged a rally in the bottom of the seventh when Hunter Schantz lined a one-out double to center and pincher runner Morgan Tripodi later came around to score on a Xanthe Jamanis single down the right field line. However, the rally was halted shortly thereafter as the Knights fell in the opener, 4-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Murray worked in and out of trouble in the first two innings of the nightcap, stranding runners in scoring position in each of the first two frames. The Cougars broke through on a one-out, run-scoring double right-center in the top of the third to take a 1-0 lead.

-Misericordia added to its lead in the top of the fourth with a leadoff homer followed by a pair of unearned runs, but Murray settled in to strike out seven in the final three innings - including striking out the side in the sixth.

-The Knight offense again struck in the late innings, this time in the bottom of the fifth as Tori Zangrilli drew a leadoff walk and after Isabella O'Hare entered to pinch run for Zangrilli, Murray ripped a double to center to plate Arcadia's first run. Following an Alex Destefano single and stolen base to put a pair in scoring position with one away, Misericordia was able to escape the jam with a three-run lead and went on to take game two, 4-1.
