Makowski Closes Out Win with Stellar Fourth Quarter on Opening Night

NEW BRITAIN, Pa. - The Arcadia University women's basketball team came out victorious in its season opener with a 64-52 victory over Delaware Valley. It was the women's first competition in 355 days, dating back to February 22, 2020.

The Knights were propelled by huge performances from starters Julia Makowski, Holly Daveski and Taylor Fritz, who combined for 51 of the Knights points. Makowski led the trio with a game-high 19 points with seven rebounds and four assists. Daveski put together an excellent performance down low with 18 points and seven rebounds, while Fritz had 14 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double.

Sidney Barrer and first-year guard Scarlett Glasser-Nehls rounded out the starting five. Barrer filled up the stat sheet with six points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals, while Glasser-Nehls played the full game for the Knights.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Knights jumped out to an early start with the first six points of the contest when Makowski opened the season with a layup, which was followed by two buckets from Daveski. Fritz later pushed the lead to 11 points with a layup to close out the opening stanza, 18-7.

- Arcadia quickly expanded their lead to 15 points with three-straight buckets from Fritz, Makowski and Glasser-Nehls, 24-9. The Aggies would fight back to bring the game within single digits, before they were silenced by a 9-2 Knights run, which was capped off by Maria Tully's first collegiate three-pointer to carry a 33-20 lead into halftime.

- The Aggies made up some ground in the third quarter with a 19-13 scoring advantage. The Knights expanded their lead to a game-high 17 points following a made basket from Daveski with 4:32 remaining. However, Delaware Valley responded with a 12-2 run to pull the game within seven points after three quarters.

- After the Aggies applied some pressure in the third quarter, the Knights remained poised and fought back with a strong final stanza. After the lead was cut to one point with 8:34 remaining, Makowski stopped the bleeding with a much-needed three-pointer. The junior then answered with four more points, before responding to an Aggies bucket with another three-ball to bring the Knights lead to nine points, 58-49, with 2:54 remaining.
