Baseball Splits Opener versus Wilkes, Fournier and Bowdish Combine for Finale Shutout

GLENSIDE, Pa. - The Arcadia University baseball team split its season-opening double-header versus Wilkes University on Saturday afternoon. The Knights fell to the Colonels 12-1 in the opener, but bounced back with a 12-0 shutout in the finale.

Luke Fournier and Colin Bowdish combined for a nine-inning shutout in the finale. Fournier, who showcased excellent movement and command of his pitches, tossed six strong innings, while allowing just four hits with seven strikeouts. Bowdish struck out three batters and allowed just two baserunners over three innings.

Connor Cheeseman had a big day at the plate with two triples and five RBI in the finale. Alex Madera reached base a combined five times over both games, while going 3-for-4 with four runs and one walk in the finale.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Wilkes had a big game at the plate with 14 hits in the series opener. The Colonels bats got off to a hot start early with seven runs in the first three innings. 

- The Knights found their way onto the scoreboard in the fourth inning. After Cheeseman reached on an error to open the inning, the junior hustled home from second base to score on an error by the first baseman, 7-1.

- After Wilkes added five more runs in the fifth and sixth innings, Adam Maser tossed a clean seventh inning with two swinging strikeouts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Fournier navigated out of a jam in the first inning with two runners on base. After opening the game with a strikeout, the junior registered two swinging strikeouts to defuse a one-out jam. Fournier responded with 1-2-3 innings in the second and third frames.  

- The Knights added three runs in the third inning - courtesy of some excellent baserunning. Ryan Smolen walked to open the inning and then swiped second base, before Madera moved him over to third with a single. Justin Massielo plated Smolen with a hard base hit to the shortstop and then stole second to put two Arcadia runners in scoring position. Moments later, Cheeseman brought both runners home with a sacrifice fly after Massielo made a heads up play to take home following an error by the catcher, 3-0. 

- Arcadia plated three more in the fifth inning, 6-0. After Smolen and Madera were bunted into scoring position with one out, Cheeseman legged out his first triple of the afternoon with a bases-clearing liner to the right field corner. The first baseman then hustled home to score on a Trey Obarowski sacrifice flyout. 

- The Knights piled on the runs with four tallies in the sixth inning. Smolen plated the first run with a fielder's choice, while Massielo brought home another runner with a sacrifice fly. Cheeseman then capped off the rally with his second triple to right field to plate two more runners, 10-0.

- Arcadia scored two more insurance runs in the eighth inning. Pat Marley earned his first career hit and RBI with a single to left field to plate Jules Mastrocola, 12-0. 

- First-year starter Emilio Pallante made several spectacular plays at third base, while contributing on offense by reaching base three times and stealing two bases.
