Softball Sweeps Lycoming, Wraps Up Opening Weekend 4-0

GLENSIDE, Pa. - The Arcadia University softball team wrapped up opening weekend with a 4-0 record after sweeping Lycoming on Sunday afternoon. The Knights topped the Warriors, 4-1, before completing the sweep with a 5-3 victory in the finale.

Juliana Presto recorded a win and a save on the day, while Kylee Schwind was victorious in game one. Presto combined for 5.2 scoreless innings, while allowing just one hit with 10 strikeouts. Schwind allowed one run in 4.0 innings, while Brenna Dolan surrendered two earned runs with seven strikeouts in 4.1 innings in the finale.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-  The Warriors were on the board first with one run in the first inning, but Schwind limited the damage with a swinging strikeout to strand a runner in scoring position. Schwind bounced back by tossing a 1-2-3 frame in the second, which featured back-to-back swinging strikeouts.

- The Knights tied things up with a two-out rally in the third inning. Madi Costigan laced a two-out triple to right field, while Alexis Burge drove a fly ball to right field for an RBI double, 1-1.

- Arcadia added two more runs in the following inning. Isabella O'Hare bunted Alexis Vardiman and Effie Jamanis into scoring position after they led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Brooke Ward plated one runner with a single to right field and Alex DeStefano brought home the second with a single to center, 3-1. 

- Costigan added an insurance run in the sixth with an infield single, which scored Ward from second. The senior outfielder made a tremendous read on the ball after the second baseman dove to knock down Costigan's ground ball to the hole. Ward kept hustling around third base and crossed home plate safely to give the Knights a three-run cushion, 4-1. 

- Presto, who entered the game in relief, struck out the side swinging in the fifth inning. The first-year standout tossed another clean frame in the sixth, before working around a leadoff double for another scoreless seventh inning.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After Lycoming scored one run in the second inning, Arcadia answered back with an equalizing run in the bottom half of the frame when Effie Jamanis drove home O'Hare with a single to right field. The Knights added two more in the third inning with a Jackie Zwicker single to plate Costigan and Morgan Tripodi, 3-1.

- Dolan, who started the finale for the Knights, struck out the side looking in the fourth inning. However, Lycoming was able to plate two runs in the fifth to tie the game, 3-3. Presto limited the damage by recording two pivotal outs -  including an inning ending strikeout with the bases loaded. 

- In the bottom of the fifth, the Knights moved two runners into scoring position with a Costigan sacrifice bunt. Brooke Ward then scored on a passed ball, while Kayla Pscolka drove home Tripodi with an RBI ground out, 5-3. 

- Presto tossed 1-2-3 innings in the sixth and seventh, respectively, for her team-leading second victory of the season. The first-year pitcher struck out a cominded three Warriors swinging in her final two innings.
