Softball Battles Back to Split Doubleheader with Messiah Saturday

GRANTHAM, Pa. - The Arcadia University softball program split its non-conference doubleheader with Messiah Saturday, dropping the first game 4-1 before rallying for a 10-1 victory in game two. Shannon Shea, Effie Jamanis, Megan Sooy, and Jackie Zwicker all had two-hit efforts in the game two win, while Brenna Dolan picked up her fourth win of the season with a complete-game effort in the circle, allowing an unearned run over seven innings while striking out four.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Messiah jumped out to an early lead with single runs in the first and third innings before the Knights' offense broke through to cut into the deficit in the top of the fourth. Madi Costigan and Alexis Burge started the frame with back-to-back singles ahead of Megan Sooy's sacrifice to move both into scoring position with one away. Alexa Vardiman followed with a sacrifice fly to right to plate the Knights' first run and cut the deficit to one.

-The Falcons answered right back in the home half of the fourth, as an error to start the inning was followed by a two-run home run to put the hosts up 4-1 heading into the fifth. Two scoreless innings followed for the Knights, but Sooy attempted to start a rally in the seventh with a leadoff double down the line in left to get the tying run in the on-deck circle. However, the Knights left her stranded at second as Messiah held on for the 4-1 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-The Knights rebounded to plate a run in the opening inning of game two as Alex DeStefano singled and moved up to second on an error to lead off the inning before coming around to score on a Burge single back through the middle. Arcadia added three more in the second - all with two outs - as Jackie Zwicker and Isabella O'Hare started the rally with consecutive base hits before an infield error plated a run and Shannon Shea delivered a two-run single to right. Alexa Vardiman's solo shot in the third extended the Knights' lead to five.

-Brenna Dolan delivered a strong start in the circle for the Knights, stranding runners in scoring position in the second and third before an unearned run in the fourth took away the shutout bid. Dolan struck out four while scattering four hits in the complete-game effort to pick up her fourth win of the season.

-Arcadia capped off the game two win with three runs on three hits in the seventh, highlighted by Effie Jamanis' RBI double to the gap in left-center followed immediately by Zwicker's run-scoring single back through the middle.
