Baseball Takes Down No. 22 Denison

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - The Arcadia University baseball team upset No. 22 Denison, 10-8, on Sunday afternoon at the Snowbird Classic. The win is the Knights first over a nationally ranked team since April 23, 2019. 

Nick Fossile got the start for the Knights and pitched six innings, giving up five hits, three runs and striking out three. Owen Margolis picked up the win for the second consecutive day. He pitched three innings, giving up two earned runs on five hits, striking out two batters.  

Hunter Curley and Justin Massielo had three hits each. Massielo drove in two runs, giving him five RBI's in the last three games. Eight different Knights tallied a hit in the victory.  

Zachary Sekelick recorded his first hit of the season in the eighth inning as he drove in the game-winning runs on a double.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Denison scored a run in the bottom of the first inning to open the scoring.  

  • Nick Opalkowski had an RBI groundout in the top of the fifth, which tied the game at one.  

  • Massielo had a two-run single in the sixth to give Arcadia a 3-1 lead.  

  • Denison scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at three.  

  • The Knights scored two runs in the seventh as Alex Madera and Opalkowski came home on throwing errors.  

  • The Big Red plated four runs in the home half of the seventh to take a 7-5 lead.  

  • The Knights rallied in the eighth inning for four runs. Connor Cheeseman started the scoring as he had an RBI double to cut the Denison lead to one. Matt Sot came in to pinch run for Cheeseman and scored the tying run on a throwing error. Sekelick's 2 RBI double gave Arcadia the lead for good, as he drove in Opalkowski and Emilio Pallante, giving the Knights a 9-7 lead.  

  • Curley scored on a wild pitch in the ninth to extend the Knights' lead to 10-7. 

  • Denison scored one run in the bottom of the ninth, but Arcadia closed out the victory. 

UP NEXT 

The Knights return to action on Tuesday, March 15, as they continue their spring break trip in Florida, taking on The College of Wooster. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
