Softball Puts Up Dominating Effort in Sweep of King's

GLENSIDE – Taking the two games by a combined 15-2, the Arcadia University softball team opened Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) play with a sweep of King's College on Sunday afternoon, taking game one 10-2 in five innings before securing game two by. 5-0 final at Blankley Field.

The Knights stand at 2-0 in league play and 10-3 overall with the victories.

King's opened the game one scoring with an unearned run in the top of the second.

In the bottom of the frame, Megan Klose led off with a walk and moved to second on Morgan Tripodi's bunt single. After Zoey Ritter walked to load the bases and a strikeout, Madi Costigan launched a bases-clearing triple to right over a drawn-in outfield. Nathalia Diianni brought home Costigan with a bunt single giving Arcadia a 4-1 lead after two.

The Monarchs cut the lead to 4-2 with a run in the top of the third.

That's where the score stood until the bottom of the fifth. Megan Sooy began the inning with a rocket single down the left field line and was pinch run for by Grace Caldwell. Serena Goodridge singled to center allowing Caldwell to move to third and Effie Jamanis loaded the bases with a sacrifice bunt as the first baseman was preoccupied with Caldwell at third, allowing Jamanis to reach base. Klose brought home Caldwell with a bases-loaded walk, and Tripodi cracked a two-run double to center bringing in Goodridge and Jamanis with Klose advancing to third. Ritter singled to left scoring Klose, and Xanthe Jamanis flied out to right with Tripodi moving up to third. After a pop-out, Diianni ended the game with a two-run double to left scoring Tripodi and Ritter.

Brenna Dolan moved to 4-1 with the complete-game victory, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

Tripodi finished a perfect 3-for-3 in game one with two runs scored and two RBI's while Diianni went 2-for-4 with three RBI's and Costigan went 1-for-3 with three RBI's and one runs scored.

Game two was a scoreless pitcher's duel until the bottom of the fourth when Diianni led off with a right, moved to second on a wild pitch, and scored when Goodridge singled up the middle.

Arcadia put the game away with four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Tripodi led off with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Allison LaRochelle, who reached when the second baseman dropped the throw from the third baseman when she was covering first. Costigan singled to left and advanced to second on the throw, scoring Tripodi and moving LaRochelle to third. Diianni brought home LaRochelle with a sacrifice fly to left, Sooy followed with a run-scoring double to right bringing in Costigan, and Goodridge singled to left bringing home Sooy to finish the scoring.

Juliana Presto moved to 6-2 on the season with another dominating shutout performance, carrying a no-hitter into the top of the fifth. Presto ended up surrendering two hits with one walk and 11 strikeouts, her fourth time with double-digit strikeouts in her last five starts.

Goodridge led the offense in game two, finishing 2-for-3 with two RBI's.

Arcadia returns to the diamond on Tuesday when it will host Messiah University in a battle of former conference foes, with first pitch scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
