Baseball Completes Three-Game Sweep of Wilkes

AMBLER – A walk-off win in game one preceded a close contest in game two as the Arcadia University baseball team took two from Wilkes University by 6-5 and 2-1 finals, respectively, completing a three-game sweep in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) play on Saturday.

The Knights improved to 6-0 in league play and 17-3 overall with the wins.

Arcadia started the scoring in the bottom of the second when Joseph Kumar walked, moved to second on an error, and moved to third on a caught stealing before coming in to score on Ryan Smolen's triple to right. Smolen then came in to score when on a fielder's choice off the bat of Nick Opalkowski.

Wilkes took the lead with three runs in the top of the third.

Justin Massielo helped the Knights tie the score in the bottom of the third when he led off with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Connor Cheeseman's single to center.

The Colonels retook the lead in the top of the seventh with two runs to put Arcadia facing a steep deficit in its last chance.

Emilio Pallante led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk and moved to second when Hunter Curley was hit by a pitch with one out. Massielo singled to center to load the bases followed by Cheeseman tying the score with a hard-hit single into left. After a pop-out, Matthew Sot was intentionally walked to load the bases, allowing Zachary Sekelick to walk off the game with a single through the left side scoring Massielo.

Owen Margolis improved to 5-0 with the win, allowing one run in the final inning. Nick Fossile pitched the initial six-plus innings, surrendering four runs (three earned) on 10 hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

Massielo and Cheeseman each paced the offense with two hits in game one.

The Knights opened the scoring in game two in the bottom of the second when Smolen reached on a two-out walk and hustled around the bases when Sekelick singled in the right-center gap.

Wilkes tied the score in the top of the third.

That's where the score stood until the bottom of the fifth when Sekelick led off with a double to left, moved to third on a balk, and scored on a passed ball.

Carson Denham slammed the door, earning the win with 2.2 innings of shutout relief allowing one hit while striking out four.

Sekelick had the only two hits for Arcadia in game two.

The Knights return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Swarthmore College for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference game.
