No. 5/6 Baseball Opens NCAA Regional with Win

AMBLER – A four-run bottom of the sixth and outstanding relief work from Nadell Booker lifted the No. 5/6 Arcadia University baseball team to a 10-5 win over Husson University in game one of the 2022 NCAA Division III Baseball Glenside Regional from Skip Wilson Field on Friday morning.

The Knights improved to 39-7 with the win.

Husson opened the scoring in the top of the first with a solo home run before Alex Madera started the bottom of the first with a single, stole second, moved to third on a Connor Cheeseman walk, and scored when Zachary Sekelick was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to tie the score.

The Eagles retook the lead in the top of the second with a run, but the Knights used a two-out single by Madera to tie the score in the bottom of the inning bringing in Emilio Pallante, who singled and stole second.

Justin Massielo hit a one-out single in the bottom of the third before moving to third on a Cheeseman single. Sekelick brought home Massielo with a sacrifice bunt before Ryan Smolen reached on a bunt single with the ensuing throw by the third baseman going awry, allowing Cheeseman to score making the lead for the Knights 4-2.

Arcadia extended its lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the fifth when Smolen singled home Sekelick.

Husson tied the score in the top of the sixth with three runs.

The Knights took the lead for good in the bottom of the frame with four runs. Matt Donchez led off the frame with a double to left and moved to third on a Pallante sacrifice bunt. Madefa brought home Pallante with an infield single with Hunter Curley moving Madera with a single to right after a pitching change. Madera came home a wild pitch making the score 7-5. A flyout moved Curley to third followed by a Sekelick single to right scored him and brought Massielo to third, coming in on a botched pickoff play giving Arcadia a 9-5 advantage.
